Reprogramming VHF Radio MMSI

No, the MMSI for a ship includes maritime identification digits as the first three digits: 232, 233, 234 or 235 for the UK. If you reflag you have to change the MMSI as well as the callsign.
Which is why I thought the EPIRB also had to be recoded with a UK MMSI - because as you correctly say, the first three numbers of the MMSI indicate nationality.

Thanks for the info.. The boat is being re-flagged Eire to UK.

Got conflicting info from Raymarine, they said that VHF has to go back to them or dealer, current Owner says he input the MMSI when he purchased the radio new, but he did not say if he has done it more than once.

Looks like I'll try entering new MMSI and if it doesn't work cough-up ££'s to a dealer !

Ho-hum yet another expense on the growing list.

It's always worth entering yourself first to see if there is still a spare try available.

You say conflicting ... not really. All sets are designed for user entry of MMSI - but not to reset the set if you need to change it later and no trys left.

Make sure that Set will display the MMSI after you enter - so you can check it !! I note that a couple of REAL cheap sets on market do not show the MMSI after setting it up !! They tend to be the ones that don't show Lat Long either from GPS input - I turned down 2 apparently good buys for that specific reason. The Cobra I did buy shows Lat Long and also a check on MMSI. For only 10 quid more than the other rubbish !!
