Replacing canopy windows

Spray Hood

If the windows are knackered, it's not worth tring to replace them & do up the rest of the fabric. We made our own when we were in the med, bought the material in Almeria, a sewing machine & an American book called the "Canvas Workers Guide, or words to that effect. Saved ourself over £500, nearly caused a divorce, but what the heck.

Down Saturday with Roy (Spotty Dog) to check out the Raymarine setup as he's an expert on the matter and I'm not, yet :D plus checking out a few things I didn't check over the last weekend such as the seacocks, stringers etc. Also seeing the full service history for the first time on Saturday having seen the Volvo dealer service records up to now. Engine oil analysis has come back ok apart from high silicon readings in the stbd engine.

Monday is lift out day for full engine and sterdrive survey by Tom (Mercuryman) followed by a full sea trial with Tom on board. I've already held my own sea trial and wasn't happy with the performance only pulling 25kts at wot but with a very dirty bum so I am expecting an improvement on Monday after the scrub.

All being well, we'll give the thumbs up next week and complete a week or so after.

I've decided not to have a full structural survey and instead am doing those myself whilst Tom is concentrating on ensuring the engines and drives have a thorough survey carried out. I cannot imagine the hull being bad on a little used 2005 boat and between Roy and I'll we'll suss any of the system issues.

I already have a list of niggles I have spotted and documented but no show stoppers, yet!!!

Those being:

Priority Items

Port engine more difficult to start than stbd when cold
Port engine rev gauge working intermittently
Port engine hours not showing on helm display
Port engine alarm panel does not self test when ignition is turned on (stbd engine does)
Port engine oil level alarm sounds in ignition position 1 after 10 secs with engine not running
Port engine coolant level low, why?
Port engine has slight diesel weep from one of the injectors
Port engine overheat alarm in June 2010, no fault found
Port engine hours significantly lower than starboard in Aug 2010 (port 122hrs, stbd 131hrs).
Port engine coolant leak from turbo repaired in June 2012, cause of earlier overheat 2 years previous?
Port engine, concern regarding lack of tappit adjustment.. rocker cover has never been removed, only 160 hrs run though.
Stbd engine control cable stiff in reverse.
Water leak in to engine bay from domestic water system from transom shower area
significant water ingress in to cockpit from starboard side running along back of helm seat, suspect canopy issue
front canopy screen perished, requires replacement
bimini cover windows, port and starboard perished, require replacement
canopy covers in general due replacement very soon with stitching becoming loose and generally looking tired
stress cracks found on top of radar arch – port side

Other Considerations

horn inoperative
various engine hose clips require replacement
padding on starboard side of radar arch requires resealing
canopy stowage panel rattles whilst underway
aft bench seat padding coming away next to companion door
transom shower trigger on shower head broken - causing leak in to engine bay?
teak strip next to engine hatch access cracked
cockpit sink covering lid.. locking spring broken, requires replacement
windscreen sealant on starboard side beginning to perish
glomex TV aerial on Radar arch broken, requires replacement / securing
toilet seat cover has 2 x deep gouges requiring repair
2 x pop locks for cupboard in heads require replacement
shower drain in heads significantly rusted
galley and cabin extinguishers are out of date
cabin light cover not secured (not fitted and stored in a drawer)
radio remote control does not work
galley cupboards do not secure sufficiently when locked.. drop down when knocked
clock in cabin does not work
popper missing from rear canopy
toilet, cooker and vinyl seating require cleaning

Gary, there is no oil level alarm on a kad 32.

If the starting is that bad I'd be carryout a compression test.

I'd be looking into the turbo water leak in a bit more depth unless it was just the gasket between the turbo and the ex manifold.

The alternator or it's connections could be the rev counter problem.

There are many other issues I'd look for on a kad 32 above what you have listed here, I'd let Tom do his job he should know all the other bits to look for, the motors have barely done anything hours wise, sounds like a good boat to me, though I'm surprised your not having a hull survey by some one who knows sea lines to be honest that's where I would spend my money as you would surprised where they do crack.

thanks Paul, advice appreciated mate:

What's puzzling me is there's no alarm on the port engine underway, it's only when it's switched to position I on the ignition so got me thinking it may have one of the dipsticks fitted as per page 59 in this PDF.. Oil Level Alarm dipstick The alarm panel is the same for sure. Could be a false positive of course as the alarm panel isn't going through its POST checks properly by the look of it.. or as you say, something completely different.

Compression tests are being done.

This is the wording from the worksheet for the coolant leak

pressure stable at 1 bar in cooling system
impellor checked ok
leak from area behind turbo on sea trial
turbo charger disconnected and taken to workshop
clean, degrease and spray turbo
clean turbo mating surfaces and refit
tested, no leaks

I thought the S28 hulls were pretty bullet proof from what I've read and generally fly through the surveys... I'll check for any obvious signs of damage and take a punt that it's ok.. unless anyone else has scary stories to tell when it comes to S28?:D

Hear what your saying on the rev counter.. it actually ends up working once the throttle is pushed forward a fair way either in neutral or when underway... once it gets going, it stays working. It just doesn't seem to want to work at idle or by pushing the throttles forward slightly, needs a good old rev up to get it to kick in

I've never seen one fitted, though from the accessory book it's available. Does it actually have it fitted? There will be. Wire loom to the d stick.

Have a great day, all very exciting for you.

To me it just looks like the owner has not done much on keeping up with general maintenance i.e. fixing problems as they occur and seems quite poor for a 2005 model, but not a show stopper. Out of interest do you know what his reason is for selling?

Because of that, I would get a full survey done, if it has not been looked after and driven hard at sea, you will want to look underneath the hull paint etc. I would check closely the hull chine etc and for cracks inside the hull.

Anyway good luck.

Hi Gary,
I too would sugest a full hull survey, we didn't hear of any problems before we bought our s240/s24 but sure enough the stress cracks were there (on three boats surveyed), at which point we found out that they were renowned for the problem, so the price was adjusted to have the repairs done.

So unless your confident that you have one without stress cracks (which are common with some sealines) a survey will be money well spent.

Even if it fly's through you then get the satisfaction that you know all is ok. :)
