Has been knackered and bodged for years, time to replace.
Does anyone know if this can be replaced (at great cost saving) with a flexible pipe?

I don't see why not. The current 'joints' are re-inforced rubber pipe. The pressure isn't high. The temperature isn't high. As long as abrasion is avoided it should be fine.
