Hi,
IMG_7639.jpeg
I am looking for a recommendation to replace and refinish the leather/hide cover wrap on my wheel and cuddy hoop.
We are up the Hamble, Southampton area.
Would anyone have a go-to fixer for this?

Regards

Mark

A few years ago, a guy in Locks Heath, Southampton, renewed the leather on my wheel, and did a fantastic job! I’m afraid I can’t remember his name, but his mobile was: 07714 767480

Here is another supplier for DIY fitting Home - Sea Dogs
I wanted to incorporate a foam layer under the leather to make the wheel easier to hold - which has been a great success. This needed wider leather covers than standard, which other DIY suppliers would not provide. I found Seadogs really helpful provided exactly what I needed, also cheaper than others.

We used one of their kits. Very pleased.
Good luck in contacting Clyde Marine Leather. I covered my wheel a few winters ago. It would have been sometime between 2018 and 2020. I found 2 suppliers online and my preferred supplier was Clyde Marine Leather, as they are local and I could have called in to ask questions and collect it. First I tried phoning but could never get an answer. I then emailed twice but got no reply. So I emailed the other supplier, placed the order and got started a few days later. Their price was lower too.

The kit consisted of 2 long strips of leather with a holes for the stitching already pierced, two needles, a cop of thick thread (or twine really) and a page of instructions. The first task was to remove the old grapevine serving, which took a while. Then the 2 strips from the kit were joined to make one very long strip and that was cut to the required length. Applying the kit was slow work and I was glad that I had brought the wheel home to work on in the evenings. There are 5 spokes and I found that I could sew up 2 of the 5 arcs in an evening before I got fed up. So the whole job took 3 evenings to apply it and a afternoon to remove the old serving.

Unfortunately I can't remember where the kit I bought came from but it think it was from the south west of England. I have now read the post that arrived while I was typing and I am sure my kit was from Sea Dogs.

+1 for Clyde Marine Leather. Had no trouble with an on-line order in 2021. Took the wheel off and brought it home to do. Quite therapeutic and thoroughly pleased with the outcome.

This may have been the same person as did mine a bit over 10 years ago:
Yacht wheel leather cover

Again the (different) url I had is no longer valid so sadly not helpful for me to say that he did a great job and it still looks good today but I *will* say that fixing my wheel cover made a huge difference, so definitely worth doing (although mine was in a far worse state than the one in the picture above).

I've also used Clyde Marine Leather as it was local. No problem with delivery and their explanation on how to see the new cover on was easy. It comes in one piece and you cut down to size of your wheel. They also provide 'spats' if needed for the spokes.

The cover is made and supplied from a couple of pieces of hide glued together then trimmed. After a couple years use one of the glue lines started to come apart. I emailed photos to them not expecting much and received, with an apology, a complete new kit.

The second time I fitted the leather cover I experimented with different types of stitching - videos available on YOUtube - quite enjoyed the therapeutic nature of the process. Take your wheel off and take it home.

Also did our wheel with a kit from Seadogs earlier this year. It was a fairly tedious and awkward job, probably 6h total for a 130cm diameter wheel. Can be done in front of the TV as long as you're paying enough attention to the holes and don't mind occasionally stabbing yourself. Quite rewarding now that it's done and very pleased with the result.

Another Reccomendation for Clyde leathers etc. BUT their reccomended stitch wasnt awfully good I thought, so instead I found an alternative on the internet or Utube which was easy to follow and produced a much better effect I thought
