Replacement roller for bow roller

So having been quoted £20 for a replacement roller for my Hurley 20's bow roller I'm looking to see of anyone has any alternatives...

Any thoughts gents??

Post the length, max diameter, bore of hole through the centre and a rough sketch of the profile required and I should think someone will offer to make one if they have a lathe and an offcut of suitable material.

Oh Colhel offered while I was looking for a picture and typing

There's also someone on eBay who will make you one from £0.99

Yeah - he's the one who quoted £20.. that "from" bit is always a killer.... :D

Took this at the boat yesterday - I think it should give and idea what I'm looking for.. gap to fit in is just less than 3 cm

I think the bow fitting is original which makes it over 50 years old, so forgive the battered nature of the fitting...

The bolt through the middle of existing roller is at a guess M5 or M6

Diameter outer edge approx 25mm, centre approx 20mm..

thats Tufnol. Mine is a hard white plastic.

I need a new one and was planning to make one from some nylon rod That will cost about £3 for half a metre. Tufnol is more expensive £20 per 300mm for 25 mm diameter

Yes... considered that... at this size I'm assuming the profile of the rod is not important, so a straight length would do? All I need then is a steady hand to drill the centre who do you recommend to supply, VicS?

No particular recommendation. I just Googled for a supplier to get prices. That was http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk/

I would machine it with a straight centre section and simple tapered shoulders . That would keep the chain away from the cheeks of the stem head fitting. I'd have to keep the size of my mooring chain in mind though.

The original ones on my Sadler are nylon. Nothing at all wrong with them except their shape is rather like the one in the OP, which allows a shank made from plate, e.g. Delta, Rocna, to slide from side to side, most annoying. I replaced the main roller some years ago with one that has a central groove just wider than the shank. That one is probably Delrin.
