Replacement Mast for a Centaur.....

So with the Jouster now in the water and with just a few cosmetic jobs left to do before she goes up for sale. I am as you know looking for a bigger roomier boat and in the ideal dream world that would be the longbow that I have my heart set on as yet that is unfinallaised and the owner although willing to sell has mentioned that he has another interested party. I find this abit strange as the boat has not had a visitor in some years and is not advertised anywhere as far as i can tell.
Of course there could be in amongst all you helpfull supportive fellows one knobhead who has done his research from my previous posts and is looking to get said longbow from me or it could be he is trying to get a higher offer.

So the question in hand is if the longbow falls through there is a Westerly centaur that has appeared in the yard over the last six months with a broken mast now laying on the floor. That I could approach the owner about again untouched in those 6 months. Not sure of the condition of the rest of the boat engine etc but If i was to approach the owner what would be the cost of a new mast or where could i look for a used mast. Don't factor in the standing rigging with the cost please as I can budget this separately.

I need something roomy with standing headroom tho I'm under 6ft and within budget (zero credit) hence I'm looking at project boats as well because being prepared to do the work as I did with the jouster means I could end up with a better boat than I could otherwise have afforded.

Unless you can find another identical or very similar (Kemp???) mast you may well have to replace the boom as well.

I find it hard to believe there could be two people on this forum daft enough to buy 40 year old boats with dead engines :)
 
I never stated that the engine is dead just that its not been used in a good few years. I have a few people in my life who know alot more about engines than I do and will likely get it started.
It may be 40 years old but its alot of good 31ft Spacious boat, but it will need alot of overhaul to get it up to standard.
I have done all of the required jobs previously on the jouster.
Sorry I'm not digging at anyone with that comment just sadly suggesting that not all who read these forums are here for supportive purposes.
Just abit frustrated that I don't currently have a definitive awnser on wether I can have it.

Yeah, and everybody selling a used car has someone coming back to look at it the next say. Sounded very keen.

They come up from time to time on eBay (see item 222151264673), but I really don't think it's worth the effort. You can pick up a good Centaur these days for £5k or less and if you can't find a genuine Centaur mast (all made by Proctor, I think) you'll have a huge amount of work modifying mast and/or boat and/or sails to end up with a boat no-one will want to buy.

It might be worth investigating repairing the mast, though you might have to find another one with the same extrusion to make a repair section. I doubt it would make financial sense, though.
 
Yes I expect he is hoping for more but the reallity is its been sitting around and everything is outdated,
so it will need new electrics throughout, all new running rigging, engine Overhaul (hopefully only), Seacocks/hoses replaced throughout. And all new kit including electrics Chartplotter, Logs, roller furler jib, lazy jacks etc

But its all stuff I can sort on my budget and timescale and I can end up with a good solid spacious boat.

Will look around for centaurs and would only touch this one if the rest of its okay. All about how much I can get for the jouster

You stand a better chance of finding a Centaur than a Longbow as there were nearly 10 times as many built.
Better odds if you include the other 31 footers , Berwick, Renown and Pentland in your quest rather than restricting it to Longbow only, but still only a total of less than half as many as the number of Centaurs.

Unless you get it for free, or are paid to take it away, don't bother. That list adds up to more than you can buy a fully functioning Centaur with modern engine for.

Dylan Winter who posts here regularly has recently bought such a boat for less than £5k.

As you may well find when you come to sell your jouster, doing up old boats, unless you enjoy the process is a mug's game. That is why run down boats are so cheap, or unsaleable.
 
I totally agree that there isnt really profits to be made but in the case of the Jouster and potentially the longbow I have/had two options

1) get a bank loan, tho unlikely with my credit rating and buy a good ready to sail boat and pay off the loan repayment each month.

2) buy a generally solid GRP boat that needs work and eventually have something I can enjoy and have no loan payments because I spent what would have been loan repayments on the project each month.

Im only looking at a Centaur if the longbow falls through and will probably be able to get one with the sale of the Jouster and some savings etc

But £5k is £5k and I don't have it so I do get the point that a ready to sail boat is an easier prospect but getting the money is not (for me at least)

Same for pentlands, berwicks and even other longbows for that matter I know of a sorted lovely Longbow for £8k that I spoke about before, but putting together £8k is not possible at the moment.

The longbow I have my heart on is a solid boat generally speaking that needs an Overhaul of its systems seacocks, electrics, running rigging, electronics etc, etc all affordable items over time that if the price is right then I will go for it.

My questions like this one are really an inquiry from more knowledgeable folks to ascertain the feasibility of such potential projects rather than this is what I'm gonna do so thats that.

That list is for the Longbow not the centaur which may have been sailed recently as its only been in the yard since December
 
Like others I doubt it would ever make financial sense; but then again a new mast is nice to have.

Try asking Sailspar for a quote, and enquire about just an extrusion you could transfer the old bits to, or fit new ones to your choice and budget, as long as you have a clue what you're doing it's quite easy - a firm called Bowman used to offer kit masts in the 1970's.

I asked Sailspar about this, as my mast has a lot of special and expensive ball bearing sheaves, and he was happy to quote for this - BUT don't forget the hassle & cost of transporting a Centaur mast to you !

merlin,

thanks very much for that; I hope it's a positive move and the lady on the phone / office & technical chap ( Martin ? ) I dealt with years ago are still on the team; they really were the most helpful people, I wish we could have given them the contract for the rigs for new boats, but that's how the marine industry is at the moment.
 
In our Club yard there is a Centaur and a Longbow(ketch) we can not get the owners to shift either of them and they are taking up useful space, the Centaur has just been refurbished with a replacment (second hand rig) and the Longbow which has been sitting for about four years is claimed to have a new engine. As the owners still pay our storage charges we can not find a way to shift them.
Anyone in Scotland as keen as the OP?
