I have a 22ft Itchen Ferry with a Yanmar YSB-8, she is still going, however I'm not sure how long for.
I would like to upgrade to something newer with added reliability. The logical option seems to be the 1GM10. Does anyone know if this would be a fairly straight swap for the YSB-8?
I am no marine engineer, but I do have some people who can help me in the local board yard. I'm sure between us we can install a new engine - famous last words:ambivalence:.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Also any ideas / recommendations on where to source a decent second-hand unit from?

The new owner of my old boat took out a YSE 12 & fitted a Beta 20. so it might be worth talking to Beta as to what they have that will fit with the minimum of boat alteration

I fitted my own 1GM10 in the previous boat. Quite easy but needed a bit of hacking and cutting on the engine beds and needed some swearing and care to get the alignment right but got there eventaully. Beta do a service I believe where they will help with engine mountings etc. The old Yanmar 8 hp came out of my current boat and was replaced by a beta 14 but it's bigger and the access is very tight. Both 1GM10s and Betas are excellent engines - neither missed a beat (to date!).

You will need to replace all the ancilliaries including controls, exhaust and prop. Probably best replacement is a Nanni or Beta 14. Virtually the same physical size as the 1GM but much more sophisticated being 2 cylinder and freshwater cooled. You could use the 10hp as it essentially the same engine and the weight of your boat would justify using the more powerful version.

Beta Marine had some offers on new units, however with my proposed budget I think I need to have a look on the second-hand market. I have a budget of £2k in mind for the job. Not sure if this is achievable, I will find out soon enough!

That'll easily get you a warrantied / overhauled 1GM10.

Another vote for Beta. When we replaced engines we looked at them all. In my size 50hp beta and Nanni were the same thing other than the colour and price with beta being much cheaper. Both being far cheaper, and simpler engines than Volvo or yanmar. They will also make custom engine mounts for you ,so if possibly you can use the same seats as before. There parts people are also very helpful.
