Replacement Boat - Advice Please!

Back last year the Volvo MD1 of my Mirror Offshore was diagnosed with a cracked cylynder block. Cooling water was pouring out and collecting in the bilge. Well - as you know, new engines are too expensive and hardly worth installing in a boat that's already 34 years old.

With few options left to me I plastered some of that Epoxy putty stuff on the engine block cracks and - bingo - it works. No more leaks - well not so many leaks anyway. So the engine still runs. the "repair" cost me just a tenner and I know its temporary but - hey - isn't everything in life temporary when it comes down to it?

Anyway now the question is what do I replace my Mirror with? I need something bigger and more impressive so that my marina neighbours stop looking down their noses at my boat and me. But - because my wife doesn't like sailing - (funny how this was never mentioned during courting days) - I have to manage single handed.

But now I've decided to replace the MIrror. The question is with what? What is the ideal boat to single-hand?

I need something that's safe to work on the foredeck of even when there's no one at the helm. Something what makes falling overboard - at least unlikely. Something which is easy to sail on my own, with sails that are easy to hoist lower and reef, and easy to moor in a marina without a crew to jump onto the pontoon. But something that looks kinda cool and impressive whilst not costing the earth. .....All suggestions gratefully received

My personal favourite would be a <A target="_blank" HREF=http://freespace.virgin.net/patrick.fox/corribee/>Corribee</A>

As well as being damn pretty looking boats, they tick most of your boxes (I think!) and will look after you (Ellen McArthur sailed round the UK in one). Marina neighbours will be amazed at your taste and discernment, and attractive women will ask you to father their children.

Fin keel version will sail closer to the wind than the bilge keel version. So what else is new? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hurley 22. lovely little boat with good reputation and a bit more space than the Corribee if not quite as pretty, any of the Folk boat derivatives. Mike.

Halcyon 23 - with the fin keel, not the earlier crystal with triple keels. Good sailing boat, will look after you in a blow and I singlehanded one for several years all over the east coast and continent. See their website:-

Virgo Voyager, standing room, sleeps 5, sails close to the wind, sturdy but nippy boat, 23ft with 1.2metre draught and inboard engine. Worth a look.

My Trapper TS240 lift keel suits me well.
My mud berth is 10 minutes up Faversham Creek so my 3 1/2 Tohatsu is sufficient
Draws 16 inches. Each sail takes approx 1 minute to set (both have luff grooves) I usually keep 2 reefs in main when single handed.
My next improvement will be autohelm which should make her perfect for me.

I have a Fox Terrier 22. Sleeps 4 in extreme discomfort, self plus 2 small kids or self in single-handed mode in fair comfort.

She sails to windward beautifully, and I can do everything myself. With the tillerpilot fitted, I can stand on the pulpit (to set up the kite) and she is stable.

Most importantly, she goes on a trailer. Mine is fixed keel - many are lift keel.

About GBP 7-8000.
