Replacement batteries

Hi.
My domestic batteries are in need of replacement. I believe they are the original boat batteries - Exide 140ah. x2. The boat is a Bavaria 30c. 2006. They are on charge daily from shore power. I was wondering if I could get away with 120 ah x2 or even 110 x3 (in parallel). Would lead acid top up type be preferable or the maintenance free, bearing in mind they are connected to the charger daily. There appears to be good deals on Ebay - would they be OK?

The capacity required depends on how long you intend being independent of a charging source. If you have shorepower charging and only spend short periods afloat without running the engine and not using a lot of electricity your capacity requirements are far less than if you spend a long time aboard and run heavy consumers such as a fridge. You may ultimately be constrained by physical space in you battery box, and your ability to charge.

Your boat came as standard with a single 140AH service battery, although a second was a common option. This is more than enough for normal weekend type use. If you are using the boat regularly there should be no need to connect continuously to shorepower. Would be sensible to fit a monitor to see exactly how much capacity you use so that you can adjust your charging regime.

So, direct replacement in terms of size and terminal layout would be OK. Choose a deep cycle battery, often known as traction batteries as they are more suitable as service batteries. Usually more expensive than similar size batteries used in automotive applications as they have heavier plates and better able to cope with regular discharge and charge.
