The original alternator on my MD2020 has failed so I am looking for an after-market replacement, preferably of higher charging capacity if anything is available. Has anybody any suggestions?

You may find you have to change the crankshaft pulley as higher output alternators use Poly V ribbed balts to cope with the higher loads. The standard 65amp alternator is normally adequate for boats fitted with a 2020.

A more modern alternator might run a slightly higher voltage, increasing charge current actually delivered.
With a little ingenuity, you may be able to fit something from a car breakers for not much money.
But if you don't convert to multi-vee belt, then the belt may slip and wear badly at start up. A smart alternator controller with 'soft start' can cure this.

It cost me £120 last time I had mine fully reconned. That was the third time in 5000 hours running time. I do have hassle with slipping belts so have changed to a different belt section to the standard volvo part. I imagine a higher delivery being a pain with belt slippage.

I recommend this company Volvo Penta Marine Alternator contact them to ask which ones will fit. You may have to upgrade the drive belt arrangement if you want a higher output.

I recommend you do some research before fitting something larger than 65A as there will be extra side loading on the crankshaft the remedy is an opposing load using a double pulley and another belt to an auxiliary pulley maybe to a pump , I toyed with this idea but it could be difficult to arrange and on a small very expensive engine I decided to fit a Lucas 127 65A cost £60 some time ago and it runs ok on a standard belt.

Thanks for advice. I have found a replacement at SVB but will try to see if i can get it repaired.

What are most common reasons for failure of alternators?
