I went to change the primary diesel filter and all went well until I tried to tighten the plastic drain plug under the glass bowl and it sheared off before fully tight

Two questions 1 where to get a replacement plug and 2 a quick short term fix?

Is it a Racor 500 type? If so you can buy the screw in plug at ASAP but you will have to remove the filter and take the bowl off as, on my 500FGs, the rubber washer can only be installed from the inside.

It says CAV made in England on the top. Seems to be a course thread on the plastic drain plug. I'm guessing an imperial thread? I've found a longish S//S bolt aboard and two nuts to temporarily shorten it. Will attempt a short term repair until in a get the proper part.

Maybe a silly question, but if you were changing the filter element, why did you touch the drain plug?

Started draining a little water in the bottom of the bowl but it was a it gunky. So decided a filter change was due. Then the plug broke doing it up. Ole will.

T. Norris appears sell a metal drain plug for the CAV Delphi filter which you seem to have. Ebay as well.
Yes T.Norris it is. Seems boats should have steel drain plugs and not the plastic ones anyway. I'll order a replacement and a spare just in case.

Thanks for that.

Those plastic drain plugs on the CAV diesel filters seem to be known to be intolerant of, well, diesel.

They (like pine plugs!) swell and shear off, tight (not too much of a problem like in my case ) or leaking (more of a problem.)

I did not know ASAP had cottoned onto this and made metal plugs available.
