Repainting Duo Props - is there anyone who does this in the Soton area?

Grand job Gary. Just a thought though, did you tell them the importance of keeping the bores clear? Any coating in there will be a right PITA to scrape out.

I did buddy, in fact they asked before I told them. Thanks for the earlier offer btw, needed them doing by Thursday otherwise would have called you

Did you leave the stainless steel thrust washer in the small prop? I expect you did as they don't usually fall out unlike the large serated one for the larger prop, that is where you don't want any paint in the rebate for the washer, and of course the splined drives but it sounds like they know what they (the sprayers) are doing anyway.

Volvo used to use Crystal Finishes at Aldershot, don't know if they still do.

Sorry guys, I forgot to take a picture of the props :o

Fairly happy with the results but one of the props has alot of pitting from the sand / bead blasting and they painted over them so the surface of that particular prop has significant irregularities. Not a major deal and partly my fault as I should have instructed then to rectify the pitting before painting.

I will ask next time and If they're not able to do so, I won't get the job done there and pay the bit extra to take them to Hamble Propellers who quoted £120 for both props. That said, the paint job looks very good on the other 3 props (2 props per duo prop). Will report back throughout the season to confirm the paint stays where it should, on the props and not in the sea,

Bizzy Bee is now back where she belongs after a 5 day maintenance and spruce up :encouragement:

I had exactly the same. I had the A5 s done as in my previous post and the 4 bladed was fine but the 3 bladed had a huge amount of surface pitting and a couple of areas that need work in future.
I also forgot to take a photo,as I was still fitting them as they were picking the boat up.
Hopefully Powerpropellers will soon have A5 s in stock again and I will have the reconditioned ones off, and keep them onboard as spares.
I have also put a serious look at anodes at top of list for the next service, either doubling up or hanging an additional one.

Think I have a bit of an issue. took the boat out and couldn't get on to the plane as the port side drive seemed to be ventilating. ok at displacement speed but as soon as trying to get on the plane, the revs went sky high and the boat vibrated. Things seemed better on the stbd drive but still didn't feel quite right. Back to home berth, drive in beach mode and am currently taking the props off to check things out. Have spoken to Tom (Tompa Marine) who suspected a couple of things.

1: spun hub
2: buggered cone clutch
3: buggered drive coupling to engine.

No indication of issues at the end of last season and through the winter so my money is on #1.

Then it clicked whilst talking to Tom who mentioned the props have a rubber / metal hub to them!!! Powder Coating requires very high temperatures to melt the powder into paint, the props needed to be aired for a good hour before they could be touched so I am guessing that by attempting to save a few quid, I've ended up requiring both sets of props to have their hubs repaired :(

the silver lining is... if I am correct, at least it's not a bullet point 2 or 3 affair :encouragement:

Going to take both sets of props off and have them looked at.

If everything was working fine last season, you can pretty much discount 2: and 3:.
FP had something similar in Belgium a few years back: the four bladed prop and the cone had fallen off!

Hopefully your hubs can be repaired without too much hassle.

With the pitting on a couple and cost of new £350 -375 I would be doing some sums,
Rebush best, maybe replace worst.
Long term maybe your best option..
I have just spent a heap of money on mine that will end up just as spares, but long term i need new..
Boats....
And sorry Gary the heat issue also crossed my mind, briefly...

Blimey, no need to feel sorry bud, completely my oversight and one I'm frustrated with myself for doing as I am usually ultra diligent when it comes to these things

I don't give a toss about your props, think of me and how I missed a unique oppurtunity to actually say something useful for a change. :nonchalance:

(that smiley means nonchalance but I've got no idea what that means, as I don't what ambivalence means either, it was a toss up between the 2 :ambivalence: )

Bloody raggy, nuff said ;)

Thinking about this, it's most likely just one hub that has spun.
So maybe worth swapping the four bladed props, and see if the problem swaps sides. If yes, then it's the four bladed prop. If no, then it's the three bladed one.

First email back from one of the prop refurbishes out there

You will have destroyed the vulcanising in all your prop hubs by powder coating them. To rehub alone is £85 + vat per prop and repairs if the props need any work is £45 per prop but if corrosion is present they have probably had it.

If you're ever thinking of having your props Powder Coated, have a read of this thread first, my mistake = your gain ;)
