Hi there,

I am hoping for a bit of guidance. I have a recently purchased beneteau first 25 with a Renault cauche rc8d engine. While I'm trying to service the engine I cannot find the location of the oil filter. Am I blind? Or is there a reasonable explanation? I have never seen an engine without an oil filter and I cannot find anything online. Any help/pictures greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums. I've done a Google and haven't found anything to help, but from a thread here:
Renalult Marine Couach Engine
Allegedly these engines are marinised Hatz industrial engines. The BMW D7 marine engine is also based on Hatz but although the base engine is the same the two companies did different conversions (generator was the big difference). Sorry I can't help more but if its just pistons or rings that you need try Hatz.
I think the BMW D7 marine engine might be an adaptation of the same engine as you have, and there's a manual here:
BMW D7 Owners Manual - Marine spare parts, Marine Technical ...
It makes no mention of an oil filter, or an oil filter change, which does seem utterly bizarre.
See here also: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Renault+Couach+RC8D+oil
I can't see an oil filter!

Good luck!

I'm an expert on these!!
Well, sort of; as Corribee Boy states they're 'splash lube', and none the worse for it.
I gained a great deal of knowledge about these engines, so feel free to PM me as I might be able to help.
I do have the manual, and should be able to forward it to you, but I'm just away down to South Queensferry to annoy my grandchildren etc.etc...
A good thing to know about though, is that 'most' spares are readily available, as the base engine's a HATZ E673, which was marinized and water cooled. The water pump has 2 sides to it, one as a bilge pump and the other for the engine cooling. Spares used to be available from Tony Bennett at << rcouach@aol.com>>, but I'm not sure if he's still operating?
Great engines, very rugged but not the most powerful.

Thank you, ya the manual for the RC8D doesn't mention oil filter either and I have watched every video in slow motion to try see if I can spot the filter to no avail, thank you I will look into the BMW and hopefully find something ?

Great info thanks ?

Hi everyone,

Since I had the same question, and have now learned the engine has nog oil filter, I'll as a new question if that's okay.

Does the engine have a thermostat of some sort? My engine always runs cold. Previous owner pinched the hose of cooling water exiting the engine to generate some heat, but this does not seem to me like the most reliable solution.

Does anyone know how this engine manages heat?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.
No, there's not a thermostat. The engine is fully cooled by the raw water cooling. The Renault water pump does have 2 chambers within it; one for pumping water around the engine, and one as a 'drain' taking water from the bilge whenever the engine's running. This pump is lubricated from the raw water side of the pump, by having a hole letting water through to both sides.
I would be very wary of having any restriction in the cooling hose to raise the temperature. This would increase the likelihood of raising the water temperature up towards that where it might encourage salt crystallisation blocking the cooling passages and ruining the engine.
Neither the base Hatz engine, or the BMW/Renault variant had temperature control, and were 'good enough'. To fit fresh water cooling, with temperature controls isn't difficult, but does require a fair amount of plumbing and wiring.

Thank you for your reply.

With your explanation the owner manual makes more sense to me.

I suspect my setup is not using the bilge pump function, as I have just manually pumped close to 20 liters of diesel/water out of the engine bilge.

I will have to investigate. Maybe it is pumping the bilge but dumping the water right back in the bilge (which I hope because there is no way I would want all that diesel overboard).

Either way, yesterday I changed the oil and diesel filter, and "pinched" the exhaust engine a little to get the temperature from <40° (not even moving the needle) to 75°. I cannot imagine it's better to run it so cold all the time. I will keep a close eye on the temp, and maybe install a thermostat of some sort after the exhaust.

For what it's worth, I am sailing in the Markermeer lake in Holland, so no salt water to speak of yet.

OK; salt water crystallises at about 71°C, so you could be introducing problems IF you did encounter it, but your location is freshwater as you know, so that's not a problem. I reckon that you'd be wise to investigate fitting a thermostat as soon as you can, just because it's going to be the right way of doing it.
Good luck though, they're good engines.(y)

I’m back with another question :) where do you guys connect the grounding wire to on the engine block? Is there a designated spot? I have it on the mounting bolt but it’s very unreliable and always have to wiggle it a bit to get it to eventually start. Thanks in advance

Presumably you are talking about the negative from the battery - which is not a grounding wire. There is no specific location, but it is common to use one of the bolts that attach the gearbox to the engine. However it can be any convenient bolt that goes into the engine block such as one attaching the engine mounts. It just needs to be clean and tight.

Ha!:)
No, the RC8D doesn't have an oil filter, thus I can only surmise that the Marine Parts item is an actual item reference, rather than a reference to the RC8D engine; it is marked as RC80D after all.

Hi Jamie N. You previous said u had a fair bit og knowledge on the Renault Marine rc8d?
I couldn't find out how to PM so I ask here.

I hope you would be willing to help me out a bit?

Do you know of a good set of engine mount to use for this engine. (For a sailboat) or maby some info on how to chose (:

Im new to all with engines but just completely renovated af rc8d to lern a bit😁

Bedst regards
Hubert

Hi Hubert, and welcome to the forum.
If you've renovated an RC8D, then you've gained great experience of them!
For the engine mounts, I've no real knowledge of how to best choose one, and am certain that many on here will be able to offer better help.
I suggest starting a new thread specifically for that subject, as I'm sure that you'll receive guidance to make the correct choice.
