Removing silicone sealant from Aluminium mast

I have seen some "stuff" in the chandlery to do this but it has a warning about using it on Aluminium. Can anyone suggest another option that may be kinder to the mast.

DIY stores usually sell a silicone remover but it is probably the same stuff only loads cheaper. Any idea what is in it?

If you have used a 1 part silicone the acetic acid it produces while curing (ever notice the vinegar like smell) has probably done more damage already than the remover is likely to. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I've successfully used methylated spirit in the past - soaked a rag with it and then kept on applying it to the silicone until it started to break up and soften. Took a bit of time but got it off in the end.
