I brought an old Kelpie (sail No 1) as a summer project, started on the paint work this week but not having any luck. Dont know what paint was used before only that it was poorly done, run’s curtain’s ect.
Iv tried wet n dry normal corse ect but Its a pig, The paint seems soft, clogs the paper and the harder you rub the worst it gets. Tried a sander but that was worse seems to melt paint which then wont come off.

Any ideas please

Ask the guys at Removall I was impressed by its ability to remove anti-fouling, and it is the least messy system that I have tried, biggest problem is getting a thick enough coat on in the first place. It needs an airless sprayer, but the standard D-I-Y jobs are not man enough.

Have you tried using washing up liquid in the water or better still, use a bar of soap. Just wet the Wet n Dry before rubbing some soap on it and that should stop it clogging up.

Yes, as far as I am aware. I have not had problems and have not seen posts that indicate otherwise. In any event, a small area application to test effectiveness and a check of the cleaned area should confirm. It's not nice stuff, I know, but sometimes there's no alternative.

Nitormors is not suitable for GRP. There are special paint removers suitable for GRP. Two that I have used are Interstrip from International Paints, and Dilunet. Both are sold at well stocked chandlers.

This chandlers webpage gives some information...

Just done mine with a mix of Caustic Soda (£3:50 form B&Q) and wallpaper paste as suggested in an earlier e-mail. I first used a pot of Dilunet which cost a fortune. The mix appears very similar and worked better as I adjusted the amount of caustic soda upwards. I painted it on in the evening, left it over night and then washed it off with water and using a paint stripping green scratchy thing, again from B&Q (I havn't got shares in them honest!).

Fibreglass came up great and appears to be no ill effects whatsoever.

If left too long it softens the gelcoat to the point where it can be permanently damaged. I have never tried this, because tins of Nitormors warn against using their standard product on GRP (if I recall correctly). However, my neighbour once stripped the varnish from his rub rail using Nitromors for varnish, blobbed some on his gelcoat, left it too long, and regretted it. It made a considerable mess of his otherwise faultless gelcoat.

I have heard that there is a Nitromors suitable for GRP, but I have never seen any for sale. Anyone found/used it?

Thanks for that. It would appear I have never inadvertantly left it 'too long' thank goodness. More by good luck than good judgement, I might add.
