I'm wanting to remove the main halyard shackle, but don't know how to remove the pin. See attached picture. Does it hammer out, or what? There is no slot so it can't screw out.

Anyone know how?

Hopefully it is removable but on all of mine, the halyard eye was made around the shackle, i.e. it is not possible to seperate them intact. You might have to hacksaw the shackle off and then buy one that does have a removable pin to replace it with.

The halyard wire has been assembled onto the shackle and swaged into place, so it cannot be easily taken apart.

If you cut the wire with a grinder it could be re-assembled and swaged again if the wire is still in good condition. This will shorten the halyard a little, which may not be a bad thing.

It might vary - but on some of these the pin can just be tapped out with a hammer - at least that is how it works on my main halyard shackle

Would you want to do that when you could just cut the shackle and replace it with one that only has one removable pin? Or if you cut the pin in the middle it might pop out either end leaving a shackle that can be removed if required.

Hi all you need is a small punch and a small hammer on the side of the shackle there will be a small hole with a role pin just tap it out and the the little stainless bit you can see will just pop out.
hope this helps

If the other end of the pin is as the end shown it won't drift out, it is rivetted in. You'll have to cut the pin and replace with a clevis pin.

Why do you want to remove the shackle. I had just that shackle (or a very similar one) spliced onto my main halyard. It means:
1) I can't lose the pin.
2) I can't lose the shackle.

I can't think or a reason why I would want to remove the main halyard shackle, it even stays on when I wash the halyard and its currently on the main halyard in the pile of lines stored under the guest bed in the spare room - but perhaps you have some special reason to remove it?

Removing the shackle pin

You have 2 choices if you must remove the shackle. As said cut the capturing pin in the middle with hack saw. The 2 halves hopefully will come outwards. Replace with a clevis pin. This pin however takes no load and is only there to stop you losing the shackle. The pin could be replaced with a piece of locking wire or even cord.
An alternative might be to put pressure on the arms of the shackle to spread them apart. This hopefully will pull the rivetted part of the pin through the hole. Or you may need to drill or grind off the rivetted part. be careful not to damage the shackle arm which does take load. How do you get pressure to spread the legs. You could try circlip pliers which spread when squeezed but they are not very powerful.
2 jemmy bars back to back might do the job. Pressure needs to be near the pin other wise you will bend the shackle legs. Or try a wedge and block bashed in to spread the legs. (bashed carefully ) Or support the top leg of the shackle by bars through the shackle so that you can bash the pin through after grinding the rivetted part.Any way you risk damaging the shackle itself (or yourself) good luck olewill

Should do, but from the other side shown in the pic.
If it doesn't, you have lost nothing by trying. I use either an appropriate size nail (masonry are harder) or a broken drill bit.
You will obviously need to clamp the shackle to save your fingers.
See post 9 , 9 hours before your post.
