removing decal mould marks

I have successfully removed my old broken decal stripe from the sides of my boat. But now im left with the white mould mark where the original decal has been for so long. Problem is, i want to put a smaller decal in its place. Has anyone ever had any answers on how to remove the marks where the decal was? as if it was never on there to begin with?

The paint or gelcoat has eroded from everywhere except where the decal was, which means that area is now higher than the surrounding area. Only way to remove it is to sand it back with a block and increasingly finer wet and dry, then compound. It's a risky business though, go through the geloat and........

Yep. That's exactly what it feels like when you touch it too.

I think best bet in that case is for me to just replace it with the other original which i already have, or another one the same size as the one that was removed. I don't think sanding and grinding is worth the damage for just a few stickers.

Just a tip ....

When applying decals - especially long strip type ... car repair guys often use the washing up liquid trick.

A mix of 'Fairy with water' applied to the surface - then apply the decal ... the "Fairy" allows the adhesive to not bond immediately and for you to straighten / slide the decal .. once where wanted .... press and sponge the decal - forcing the "Fairy" out. It takes a little longer for adhesive to fix - but it actually fixes just as well as if "Fairy" never used.

Recommend you replace it with the same size decal.

Another 'just comment' ... the human eye is terrible for focusing in on something when highlighted.

Even though the erosion line is probably only felt by finger (we'll ignore the colour shade difference) ... if you put a less wide decal strip along it 0 the eye will see that 'ridge' ...

If you left the decal off and brought the colour shade near to rest of boat - it would be less obvious except when sun shines along it.

I have to agree - better to put new same as old ....

It actually seems to be the opposite. The decal area is indented more than the rest of the gelcoat.

If i put a decal somewhere else where had never had one on. Would i eventually end up with the same problem?
