Suggesting a solvent such as white spirit will remove the glue residue of masking tape is optimistic. Masking tape glue is designed to resist the solvents found in paint (such as turps or white spirit!). You need another solvent such as alcohol or acetone.

You'd think so, but it does work, albeit with persistence, and it's less likely to damage anything.

I think that the only way it works (and I know what you mean as I've been there and done it) is that the white spirit acts as a bit of lubricant to the physical rubbing that's removing the goo and once a bit is removed, the white spirit stops it sticking again somewhere else.. and it doesn't always do the latter very successfully.

Useful stuff sometimes shows up in Lidl in small aerosol for removal of glue stuff but if you cannot wait then if you look at websites for headliner trimmers they sell aerosol sprays for removal of headliner glue which should see off any masking tape glue residue .
