We have recently bought a Fairline Sunfury which needs some work both inside and out.

The stripes along the side of her hull need to be removed as they are badly cracked and worn. Can anyone advise me on how to remove these - have tried to scrape them off with little success and they just won't peel off.

Also we would like to rename her and need to remove the painted on name - any suggestions on how to do this on GRP.

G'day Sandrao,

Welcome to the YBW.com forums, Your questions have been covered many times, and results can be found by using the search facility.

Meantime, a heat gun will speed up the removal of stick-on's and your local chandler will have a paint stripper suitable for fibreglass (Or Gelcoat). You may have to compound the painted area to remove shadows left by the old signwrighting. The M3 range work well for me.

Hope this helps

If the strips are vinyl then a hairdrier is kinder to the hull, it will soften the material, use a hard wood scraper then remove the glue with petrol. This advice from chap doing the job next to me, who is a plastic sign maker . Its a real pain of a job

I've always used a heat gun carefully as you need a fair bit of heat to get it started, takes practice be careful.
As regards the painted bits, use wet & dry wet and a sanding block, work from about 220 through to 1200 then use t Cut nad polish to finish.
Halfords do a brilliant sanding block with two densities of foams and velcro pads for about a fiver.

When we purchased the new vinyl stickers for our boat we also puchased from the manufacturer a small bottle of vinyl stripe remover. It works really well no need for heat gun just rub in the liquid wait a short while and pull off. If all the adhesive doesn't come of a bit more liquid does the trick.
I have forgotten which company it was but they advertise in PBO and are based in the midlands.
