Hi Forumites

I have left duck tape on my aluminum mast for last two years and am looking for advice on how I can remove the duck tape. When I carefully peel off the tape quite a lot remains and old glue is left on the mast surface.

Has anyone got any ideas to safely and quickly remove the duck tape?

Thanks

I've had success in the past with nail varnish remover on GRP.

Don't know how it would perform on aluminum though, or if there would be any problems.

(having 3 women in the house means there is usually plenty nail varnish remover around!)

White spirit should soften the glue and allow you to scrape it off, but it's a mucky business.

Plan B would be WD40, plan C, acetone.

Be gentle scraping - an old scotchbrite or one of those pads for non-stick pans with the white abrasive bit - you don't want to damage the anodising.

I'm not 100% on this... but IIRC White Spirit or Meths will do it. Of the two I'd try Meths first.
Come to think of it though... I could be wrong about both of those. I'm more inclined to think that Cellelose <spelling?> thinners is the stuff.

As well as varied solvents (don't think White Spirit has been mentioned yet) a bit of hot air from a heat gun will help too.

White Spirit will do it (BTDT). Just dampen a bit of cloth or sponge with it and rub it away. It might take a few minutes to soften up.

Stuff called "Goo-Gone" does the trick. Smells of lemons and works for duct tape, masking tape, sellotape, price labels and all things sticky except jam-coated little fingers.

If really baked on you could try gently warming with a paintstripping gun and scraping the actual tape off with a makeshift wood scraper. What is left is the adhesive which can be removed with a solvent like white spirits or acetone as others have said. Have found kerosene very effective.

Try Goo Gone:

Meths is good but a good fix for anything like this is good old Pledge, spray a copious amount on and then leave for a couple of minutes, dont leave too long as otherwise you might have to polish the rest of the boat to match!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
