Does anyone have any first hand experience of the GSM SMS based boat monitoring systems that are currently available?
Our boat is moored in a Corfu marina and the livaboards relate how the 'marina guards' pay local lads to trot up the pontoons to log into the patrol keypoints, thus saving them the hassle of the walk.
It would be reassuring to know when a bilge pump starts running unexpectedly, someone is aboard or the mains has tripped. At least you have a chance of getting in touch with someone to try to sort things out.
I have seen 3 or 4 such systems and none of them are exactly cheap. Prices starting at around £400 for a very basic system. I am interested in monitoring one or 2 bilge pumps, a P.I.R sensor, the mains input and the battery voltage at the very least. The ability to monitor GPS position and give an alarm if the boat was moved would be a bonus. ( I'm sure the next door neighbours boats are much more appealing than ours however! )
