Remote controlled life preserver

I was wondering if the sort of rocket-propelled net that is used for catching shore-birds for censusing could be adapted...

Why adapt something, instead of just buying the fully developed and proven product off the shelf? They're not common on yachts, but line-throwers have been a standard part of ships' equipment for donkeys' years.

Distance is the problem ...

When Bembridge Lifeboat shot the line for me years ago ... they were at least 50m away .. that does not sound much ... but its a lot when firing a line ...
A net ? Why a net ? The line is fired to cross and lay over the boat and be easily picked up to haul messenger - then main line over ..

A net has too many possibilities to not go the distance ... get snagged ...

Agreed. But I thought that the original idea was for a life saver rather than a yacht saver. The point of a net, if it could be made to reach the casualty, is to collect without co-operation. I believe the RNLI even saves people who have tried to commit suicide...

You are aware that rocket lines can be used to rescue a person in the water ? They are not just for getting lines to another boat etc.

I agree aa rocket line would overcome any bad weather issue with a drome or the OP's life preserver.

The issue is control.

If we could add a control function to a rocket line or better a GPS controlled rocket like a GPS controlled drone. We could also undae the position of the MOB id he had an AIS beacon updating his position.

Convergence of existing technology to improve safety at sea.
