Remote Boat Security and Temp Control

My intention was to set heaters to come on at 5 deg C and off at 10 deg C

I think that's too much. You are not trying to heat the boat, just to stop it from freezing. Also with them running until they bring the compartment up to 10 deg C they will be running more than they are off and will use a decent amount of leccy. I set mine to come on at 3 deg, so they have a bit of a head start as temps drop. They then go off when the temp rises above 3.

I note that RF-Solutions lists the Plug-Text for £49 which is much less than the £110+ that others i.e. Thermotxt/Tekview/Energenie charge. I am not sure why there is such a price difference given that they all seem to be the same thing made by the same EMATE factory in China.

For those who haven't got one yet, they have a lot of features which makes them useful beyond just maintaining the boat's temperature within a given range: they can notify you of power outages or rapid temperature changes, allows you to schedule and/or remotely switch things on or off e.g. lights, heaters, etc. There is even an app that makes setting up and controlling the thing much easier compared to sending SMS commands.

In terms of temperature, I set mine to 5-6 degrees. My logic is that the temperature may well be lower towards the outsides of the boat where the pipes are; the heater being only 110W might otherwise not catch up with rapid temperature falls and, lastly, if the power goes off, it might give me a bit longer before things start to freeze... Conversely, I believe, there is a risk of condensation / rust...
