Still trying to get my boat in the water, up till now my own resources have been enough for me to get by, total DIY (not saying all is as it should be because as a total novice I just don't know!) and I have a 50 year old boat looking like new - now complete with the windshield it had when new!
So the only thing left is to mount my first choice engine, the merc 350 from 1961 and here we are another week on - two condensers purchased from two different uk chandlers, both supplied by the same importer (EP Barras) both wrong, despite engine model, CORRECT PART NUMBER and serial supplied to the chandlers.
Teleflex steering - despite stating when ordering that I needed to connect to either an old merc or johnson with centre pin from cable days. What do I get? - fitting for outboard with steering tube, not at all funny - so ring them up and am told I need an adapter, OK no problem send me one says I, and pay up with another £35 - silly fool, what do I get? A clevis pin set???????? any schoolboy could make it for nothing! and what use is it when connecting teleflex?
Are the chandlers in the uk stupid or what? The electrical parts have now been sourced in the US together with other ignition spares for less than the UK prices.
the 'Teleflex' adapter (otherwise known as a clevis pin set) - it's a merc part - Quicksilver but it's going back! I shall fabricate a stern tube that will suit either outboard and connect with a link arm.
If anyone wants to know which chandlers not to deal with on the phone or on-line then PM me and I shall enlighten you.
There again if one of those chandlers whose nether regions are growing out of their head reads this then perhaps you will want to contact me and pursuade me not to name you!

Hi Dave

I know exactly how you feel, I've had similar problems myself before, but is it the chandlers at fault. They can only go by the information supplied, (by you and the suppliers). more often than not it's the badly written catalogs, or the idiot in the warehouse picking the wrong part, that's to blame, and until the part arrives no one knows what you will end up with.

Well I think I'm sorted now - the owner of the chandlers who let me down on the Teleflex steering got in contact today (after holidays) the adapter for my engine/boat configuration is in the post.
The ignition parts I needed arrived today, from Grubbs Marine in the US for $45 rather than the £47 quoted here in UK! AND they were exactly what was asked for, not the inapropriate (spelling?) and incorrectly substituted parts supplied by the Mercury specialists I contacted in the UK - still waiting for refunds on the returned incorrectly supplied parts as well!
So hoping for a little help from the weather in the morning and I will install the newly rebuilt ignition - the beast has got to run now!
