From December27th 2022 all sim cards in the Philippines must be registered.

It's similar in Hong Kong - you have to have a verified ID when you get a pay as you go SIM (existing overseas SIMS aren't affected). Either Hong Kong ID Card or Passport is required. I would guess that it is the same on the mainland. It can be a bit of a pain doing it if you're using a non-smartphone!

Given the widespread use of throw-away SIMS in crime, I guess it's not an unreasonable requirement. But it is a bit annoying.

Exactly the same in Saudi Arabia. Activation of a SIM requires your citizen, IQAMA or the number put into your passport on entry to the kingdom.

Sound really. Everything is related to your phone number (employment, medical, government services, bank, etc) so making sure your phone number really belongs to you is good practice.
