I have a regal 2565 D3 Volvo engine - 5 cylinder - 190 hip- diesel
Took her for first trip yesterday.
Having checked all fluid levels she started ok. I ran her until she heated up then tried to get her to reach her max speed. ;27 mph
She got to 20 mph then after a few seconds she ,slowed to 5 mph - ALARM ON DASH '' CHECK ENGINE''
I turned her off , dropped anchor and checked what little I know about engines .
No suspect smoke or smells.
Started. Her again , the beep- beeb of alarm continued . I overran this and drove 3 miles home at 5 mph .
One battery was low and I was advised to install new one . I did replace the battery this morning .
Same message appears on dash (on the EBCs- is that what they're called ?)
Same message ''CHECK ENGINE '' appears . No indication is given as to what is to be checked .
At one stage today I put her into rec=verse and back to forward and got message - ALARM CLEARED'
Thought I was ok and headed back upriver and went up to 20 mph -same thing happens - she slows down suddenly to 5 mph and ''CHECK ENGINE '' AND BEEP-BEEP alarm started as before .]I crawled home at 5 mph.
I need a Volvo engineer with a diagnostic computer kit to diagnose problem .
I am advised not to let any unqualified mechanic near it .
I live in west of Ireland , where there doesn't appear to be a Volvo Marine mechanic near at hand.
I had the diesel in'' glass bowl'' checked and there is no water in fuel , neither is there dirt in fuel
Today she would not rev up to go above 8mph-10 mph , presumably to prevent me from damaging the engine
Anyone have any ideas as to what might be my problem.
Any thoughts would be appreciated .

Volvo Penta D3 can suffer from a stuck actuator on part of the turbo. The actuator operates the variable vane technology and can stick. Needs to be freed off with duck-oil / WD40 or similar and manually operated, push down and released until moving freely. Unfortunately the fault code now stored in the engine control system can only be cleared by use of Volvo Vodia tool. Cannot offer assistance with finding VP engineer local to you.

The EVC screen has quite a neat feature, by pressing and holding 2 of the buttons, can't remember which, for about 5 seconds it will go into OEM mode. You can then navigate to the fault and read off the code. This can then be checked through an engineer, or if all else fails, Google. Some of the codes are very generic, but you might get something useful, and at least be in a position to query what a non VP engineer does before they do it.

On my D3 110 if a fault occurs but the source is resolved then it seems to clear from the fault list. It probably needs VODA to clear it fully, but loses the warning on startup.

Hi Springer
Thank you for your comprehensive reply ..As you may have detected I am not mechanically minded really - I should be more so owning boats now for 30 odd years -
Would the ''CHECK ENGINE'' warning appear on turning on the ignition ?
In my case the CHECK ENGINE warning comes on just after the electrical system runs through its own systems. It tells you it is checking . Then tells you when check is complete. THEN the CHECK ENGINE warning appears and the BEEB BEEP.
The turbo charger would not have come in to play as yet .
But are you saying that it could have ''remembered'' the fault in the turbo from the first occasion it occurred - when it first detected the fault ??
Or does it sound like something else to you now when it happens before the engine is running ?

Thanks Biggles
I can't seem to keep the EVC screen in a ''steady state'' It jumps from '' CHECK ENGINE '' to ''remaining fuel'' or ''trim pressure''
The most useful screen for me is the engine hours and Gal / hr page /screen - which I can't seem to be able to access now.
Curiously the '' trim oil pressure'' is reading 0 bars; the. fluid level in the leg/ limb lifting system is fine .
But as I raise the leg the bars on the oil pressure start to rise.
I don't want to confuse matters but thought I should mention this . Could it be related .
Again I am sure the fluid /oil /water / gear /trim /steering/ crank -ALL ok

Re "trim oil pressure" are you sure it's not trim angle ? O = fully down, the indicated angle increasing as the drive rises. The trim sender on a DPS is usually set to get the trim gauge at 0 when the drive is in the fully down position, it certainly was on my previous 2 boats that had DPS drives (admittedly no EVC on those). My DPH with EVC can be trimmed in so the reading is slightly negative . There is no trim pressure reading ( or sender even) on mine.

Have you tried pressing and holding down the button with the lock symbol on it, so the little padlock light stays on ? Unless I do that my trim will not work at all and the EVC display in the tacho is erratic.!

TJANK you for this observation .
No I can not categorically say what the EVC is saying re the trim. I can't capture the screen I want . On my EvC there is one large button . switch to the left ant two smaller ones , one over the other to the right of screen- the screen is v. small.
Usually I have the EVC set on the screen most helpful to me . This screen tells me MPG among other things like temp .
I can't seem to scroll from one screen to the next . the Left switch if held down seems to flick through all the other options without ceasing , then returning to ''CHECK ENGINE ''
- WHICH is pretty dam infuriating. The switches to the right seem to for dimming and brightening the screen ,
I am told that if I hold the left switch down for 5 seconds it with scroll through the c]screens , but the author was uncertain of this. He also stated that the error code is contained in this EVC if I located the correct screen.
Interestingly on your point re position of trim- leg ; when I do hold that trim pressure screen and simultaneously lift or lower the leg the bars across the bottom increase or decrease - is this relevant.
I'm sorry . I don't have a manual for this EVC . it is made by FARIA - I've looked up their website and can't locate my EVC system.
It is a fairly basic system consisting of 2 EVC - ONE I keep on the fuel gauge mode ; the other on MPG .
Does this help you .
I am at and of my tether here . I have to get a Volvo marine engineer with the requisite computer technology to locate and correct what may be a very simple fault - or may require eliminating a ''learned' ' but now corrected fault.
Thank you for your contribution
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
George

I'm confused now. What EVC system is it ? Mine's an EVC-C ( built 2008). The only displays for that version are in the tacho or in a separate display (5 buttons). I do have the installation manual. admittedly for the D4/ D6. The EVC system for the D3 can't be markedly different.

Do you want me to send you a copy? (you'd need to send me a pm though with your E-mail address)

Edit: I just had a look at the D3 owners manual on line at VP. Up to 2009 at least, the EVC control panel for the D3 EVC did not have the lock function.
