Hello,

For the past couple of years we have used a cheap coolbox from Wilkinson. It runs on 12 volt and we have used a transformer to use it on shorepower to save on the batteries and charger.

The only problem is that it doesn't have a thermostat and has quite a load noise so is really annoying at night.

We have a hatch in the galley that leads to a cupboard below but I believe these can be converted into a fridge.

How easy is this?

I have also heard off relatives with a caravan that they have a coolbox but it doesn't make a noise.

We have plenty of space for a coolbox but its just the noise that gets me.

So if anyone knows of any silent running coolboxes or if you have fitted a fridge for under £100 I would be grateful to hear your thoughts.

Thanks
Ian

hi we had a locker in galey that was well insulated.(depends on cruising area but we used about 3 inches of foam and then epoxy covered. It was then very easy to put compressor outside and cold plate inside with thermostat. downside was that I believe it cost around £250.00 but has been excellent and makes only small amount of noise

Have a look at the Waeco and ASU isotherm units, which will provide the cooling.
they have a separate cold plate from the compressor unit and the fan only works when the unit senses a charge from the engine in the system.

You will have to thoroughly insulate your coolbox, about 4" of polystyrene is sufficient or use less thickness of one of the higher tech insulation materiels like Insulex.

You are looking at a fairly large expenditure though, to do the job properly, and £100 definitely won't cover it.
