reeds online

[ QUOTE ]
I bought the online almanac at the boat show and seem to be dense as i cant download the thing to usb stick.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you could do that (and it updated) that would be genuinely handy! However, from what I could work out, thats not what you get. I could be wrong, but my reading of this:

Double value, with a Membership to Reeds Online combined with a huge 1GB USB memory stick. Perfect as a gift, you can use the stick to store pages from Reeds Online for later viewing, as well as your photographs and other documents.

suggests you get access to the full online almanac, and you can store bits of it on the handily provided USB stick. Seems like the USB stick is a gimmick /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Wish I'm wrong - as if I am, I'd sign up.

Unfortunately you are not wrong /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. We bought one at SIBS and made the same mistake - we thought the USB stick was to download the whole thing. The stick does seem to be a bit of a gimic though. It is reportedly big enough to take the whole of reeds online, but you have to down load it page by page. We wanted access to the online version anyway. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the guys on the stand and say that it was boatsheds fault that we misunderstood - they gave us the free bubbly that clouded our understanding /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Sorry rickp but I don't read it like that at all... it says "store pages" not store the whole almanac... to me that suggests that you can only store pages at a time.

I have to say that it does say "huge 1GB USB memory stick" but 1GB certainly isn't huge... in fact it is quite small as far as USB memory sticks go nowdays.

WRT to Brendans Reply - Exactly what I'd thought I'd bought !!!! A memory stick where I could update the almanac online in my home and take it to the the boat and view offline in a browser - this is what I was sold at the boat show!!! (grrrrrrrr!!!) not so it would seem as pac says I have to download the pages that I want to the memory stick - page by page and even then it will not be the full php page - definately oversold at the boatshow (and prior to the boatshed bubbly anne!)

What I actually got was access to the online almanac and a free 1GB memory stick (crickey - we give away 2GB on our training courses!) Does any one know any good website mirroring software...........

Some of the press reports gave the impression that the whole almanac came on the usb stick, and that every time you went to the reeds online site, the usb stick would update with the latest data.

[/ QUOTE ]

Precisely Brendan. At the show (and in their press releases), they led you to believe that the stick held the entire almanac and would be updated automatically. However, the bit I quoted from their online shop implies differently (to the point that its far less useful).

I imagine the marketing folk got a little carried away /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It's illegal to misrepresent a product in that way.

If anyone has bought it, based on that representation, then report it to trading standards, with a print out of the link I've provided, before they remove it.

I don't normally steam from the ears about products, however this one seems to have been completely misrepresented

Unless anyone actually bought a product that does have the whole almanac on the stick, and it does update automatically, as described on their website.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought the almanac was on the USB stick. Definitely felt foolish when I logged on and realized what actually was available /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The web site also implies that any subscriber with their own USB stick can download the data for offline use, never mind any special boats show offer.

It is almost worth signiing up to have the pleasure of making them either cough up the advertised service or give one a refund and all the asociated bad publicity

Dear Sir

It has been bought to my attention that there is some confusion over the ability to download our online content using the supplied USB memory stick. For clarity let me explain exactly how this facility works and the rationale behind it.

The USB stick was provided as a means of storing the information required when away from an internet connection. Users have the ability to download personally selected text and imagary onto the stick by cutting and pasting the required sections into a word document. This is a straight forward application and clearly demonstrated on the stand at SIBS. The information can then be printed off, laminated etc. for use in the cockpit for example.

In order to prevent the abuse of this product it is simply not possible to allow the whole book to be downloaded onto the stick. We are looking into the ability to encrypt the data to see it we can offer chapter downloads but again this needs careful development work to avoid data theft. I note on one of the strings a correspondent even suggests "Does any one know any good website mirroring software..........."!! On this basis alone I think it is quite legitimate for us to build in protection.

As the product is server based each time a member logs on they will automatically get the updated data.

We welcome all feedback from our growing user base good or bad but can only act on it when we know about it. If there is good reason to offer a 100% refund we will of course do so and would encourage people to contact us directly. Those that have contacted us with the similar questions have all received prompt, courteous and satisfactory service.

I hope that this clarifies the position, but if you or any of your correspondents have any further enquiries please feel free to contact us directly on 01799 526070 or email me at simon.whittley@reedsnauticalgroup.com.

You've conveniently missed the point old fruit.

All the posters above, and presumably many others, have bought this product because it was presented as something it is not. Now whether that was intentional on your part or not is irrelevant, you have a duty to either give them the total access they thought they had or refund their money.

You have done yourself a great service by publicly posting on here, now complete the process by offering what they thought they had bought.

I'd suggest you remove from your website, the article that says the product is available on usb, and automatically updates when you visit your website, as it does not represent what the product actually is.

Dear Correspondent

I read with dismay the comments posted on this forum concerning our new product.

It is possible to down load the required pages by simply cutting and pasting into a word document. This can then be stored onto a hard drive or on to the USB memory stick provided.

This was clearly demonstrated at SIBS. In order to avoid further confusion we are adding a print/save here button onto the individual port pages.

It is not possible to allow people to download the whole of the book onto the hard drive or memory devise as this would lead to abuse - sad but a fact of life these days. This has never been advertised as a feature of the product.

As regards updating this is a server based product and as such when updates are added to the site members logging on will by default access the updated data.

We always welcome feedback whether good or bad but can only act on it when we know about it. Comments made on public websites need to factually correct. As regards refunds, as with any business we will of course offer a refund as a matter of course where there is genuine dissatisfaction.

Please feel free to contact me direcly if you would like any further information about the Online Almanac.

Yours faithfully

Third para down. It reads as though you have an active sync product that will update the USB stick automatically if stored info has changed. What you have is a website. People figured out the whole copy/paste thing a little while ago, so advertising it the way you have is a little like trying to sell the paper version as having 'ink' and 'pages' as new features.

From your website, I read as a full Almanac.

Reedsonline.com has been launched in dual format at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. In addition to the introduction of the innovative online version of the legendary ‘yachtsman’s bible’, Reeds Nautical Almanac, users of Reedsonline.com will receive a USB version.
