Anyone ever made it to Reedham?

Have some mates there and was weighing pros and cons of making a weekend of it and sailing up from Titchmarsh or going by car.

Not near a chandlers so cannot locate any decent charts...so unsure of entrances, air draughts etc etc

37 foot motorboat...10 foot beam, 3 foot draft...maybe 3m airdraft with radar and aerials

Hi
The first thing to be aware of is the fact that getting into the port of Great Yarmouth can be tricky.
Then you have the Haven bridge in the town and the cantilever bridge to negotiate to give access to Breydon Water and the rest of the river Yare.
As far as I know you can then navigate up to the swing bridge at Reedham without too much of a problem.
The bridge is possibly too low for you to get under so you will need to find out about opening times etc.
You should find most of what you need initially here:
Broads Authority
Contact Yarmouth Yacht Station on 01493 842794 for Yarmouth specifically.
Contact the Broads Authority River Control Team on 01692 678459.

(Never been through but I know a man.....)

Cheers

there are 2 ways.
Gt Yarmouth where you can arrange for Town Bridge and Breydon Bridge to open...i think its still book 24 hrs in advance, 01493 651275 not manned 24/7 be careful of sat/ sund....then a blast across Breydon water unless the Broads hitmen now have control. couple of hours to Reedham
Gt Yarmouth Port Ch12....and do call before entering there's lots of big stuff moves in and out.

Alternatively Lowestoft. Bascule Bridge just after the entrance only available for pleasure craft as specific times....my 2004 alamanac in front of me has wrong times.....may have complications at the moment as you may need to get the railway bridge swung before you can enter the lock into Oulton Broad. 2 miles up stream of bascule bridge, they are working on the bridge and it has restricted openings. Mutford Bridge and Lock 01502 531778 not manned 24/7.
Oulton Broad Yacht Station will also give assistance....bet you Pete makes sarcy comment....01502 574946
Once through Oulton a nice leisurely cruise to reedham....
Again Lowestoft busy commercial port Ch14 a must for entering harbour and movements

Anything else you want to know....shout it is my home area.

Oulton Broad swing bridge (railway) currently has limited opening due to refurbishment works, but is timed to open with Mutford Lock.
I sailed from Ipswich to Reedham a few years back and enjoyed it a lot.
There are one or two issue you need to be careful of at Reedham
1. Don't let the sometimes swift tide push you up against the swing bridge. Have watched several get pinned against the bridge.
2. Holiday boats have big problems mooring here when the tide is running, so they tend to bounce off things.
3. High water can be level with the top of the wall at Reedham.

For the railway swing bridges look for the signs saying they will/willnot open positioned against the signal box wall. one red flag means they are working and two red flags means they are buggered.

The bridges tend to stick on hot days, but recent works should have improved bridge reliability.

Signalman listens to channel 12 and people shouting at him.

No you dont need to go under St Olaves. Straight run up the cut, which has been open for a few years now.

Its not quite as complicated as you might think and you can at least stop over at Lowestoft or Oulton Broad.
It just needs a good passage plan properly thought out....but then so does Gt Yarmouth.
Ive done both many times.
I suspect there is some very good info on Mobo from Brigid Mary.
The scary comments by Wherry at Reedham are there wether you go in at Yarmouth or Lowestoft. But a decent helmsman with a radio can call the bridge from 300 yds away and arrange for the swing. until it does.... keep clear!
