The redex type potions that are advertised to clean the injectors up if mixed with a tank of diesel... do they work? what exactly do they do? can you give the system a quick fix via a fuel filter fill?

They certainly seem to work in road vehicles. Its a well known trick for getting diesel car engines to pass the emissions test in the MOT.

They normally put it straight into the filter bowl, rather than the tank, and give it an undiluted blast.

Last year I put some into the tank for my old engine of unknown history. It was running but seemed to lack torque and was difficult to start especially when cold. Maybe coincidence but it started much easier and seemed to run more smoothly with more power. Totally subjective but it got my vote. I've been told you shouldn't add it too often so I put a second dose in the tank a couple of weeks ago.

I have used several of these treatments in my years in the motor trade but my experience is limited to road vehicles.
The all claim to do the same job but I have found 'Wurth' and 'Forte' to be the best. One treatment put into 5 to 10 gallons of diesel will do its job. I have seen some substantial results in older and well used engines.
I always found the above method to be much more efficient than any 'intensive' mixing with small amounts of fuel.
All the above is 'in my opinion' only.

I use Wynns injector cleaner every 10k or so and it does seems to make a difference, smoother quieter running. Have had no real success with anything else.

But I get much the same effect driving 150 miles each way to see the grandchildren. Its me that needs the additive then - preferably in malt form!

You don't need a brand name cleaner as most are based on solvents of various sorts.
But beware of over-use as not only will they clean injectors - they will also start to clean bottom of tanks - I'm in the fuel game and I freely admit I did just that.
For years my tank had been happy with red diesel in UK. Odd tipples of juice now and again to keep things sweet ( I can take top of a jungle juice bottle literally and tell if it's right stuff or not ). So I bring boat out here where we don't have red - we only have ULSD Road diesel. So methinks ok - I'll kill two birds with one stone ... dose up to clean system of red.

Took approx. 500nm of motoring to completely block all filters, incl. thimble in pump. Tank had a swill of crud in bottom that would have made quatermass happy. Thinking is that while motoring in relative calm on river etc. - all was ok ... once I got outside in rough seas and big swells - tank decided to let go the hard crud in bottom helped by good doses of cleaner.

So careful if you must, save money if you don't. IMHO

Note : I had emptied and thought I'd syphoned out tank well on first getting out here - but it's a mild steel dark tank - I could not see the layer of dark crud in bottom.

Iwas also thinking about putting my Forte treatment into the fuel filter bowl neat to get a quick fix - did you do this in the end and and was it effective ?

The alternative is to stick to the instructions on the bottle and dump the 400ml Rorte liquid into a 100 lts of DO in the tank - what does the panel think 'in the tank or in the bowl '!

Read my missive above .....

Personally in the bowl. If you must ! Either that or clean up tank etc. manually and then use chemical to keep it clean by adding to fill-ups.

I have no evidence for this so don't take this as laboratory speak or gospel. But I wonder if over-use of solvent cleaners - which generally are far more ignition potent than diesel could damage injectors ? or even piston crowns ?

Just remember that if you have crud in your system - where does it go ? What does it do when it's going ?
