A suggestion from Spain and initially supported by Lib/Lab MEPs that member states of the EU should display the emblem of the Union in one corner of mercantile ensigns etc. has been defeated by an absolute majority in the European Parliament according to SW MEP Giles Chichester (where have I heard that name before?). The Labour Group were persuaded to change their minds before the vote.

Thank goodness for that.

Now, how about St Piran instead?

Well, there\'s a surprise!

Yet another 'straight bananas' storm in a tea-cup frothed up to fuel the flames of europhobia. And while our backs are turned, ....

There is no way that I would ever sail with a defaced ensign with an EU daisy chain on it. I think I would give up sailing first?

Why is it that us (the UK) with a long history of seafaring and sailing under a maritime flag have to bow down to Nations that have never had a maritime flag as opposed to a National flag.

I need help here because I'm trying to think of any other Nation that has a specific maritime flag.

As far as I know, NO other EU country has a maritime flag?

The Red Ensign is known and reckonised throughout the world. WHY change it. Is it the straight cucumber senario?

Calm down

Nothing is changing. The proposal has been voted down. There have been numerous threads on this across the forums for several months.

A Spanish Green MEP managed to slip an amendment into a proposal, that for means of identifying European vessels, that the gold stars should be shown.

As is it turned out, it was overwhelming defeated, when a french MEP, put forward a counterproposal. Labour, Conservatives, Merchant Seamen and all sorts of other people are claiming victory.

It's always been stated that it was very likely to be overturned in a plenary session, and if not there, overturned at a higher EU level

PS. The banana thing is yet more anti EU press hysteria. There is no such regulation

I'm calm now<s>

I'm glad it has been defeated, I thought for one minute I would have to give up sailing or at least flying an ensign.

Sounds a bit extreme. At the end of the day, its just a label. Given the choice, I would prefer the old Scottish ensign, but util that is legalised, I’ll take whatever is going.

OK, here’s half a dozen: Russian Federation, Pakistan, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand

I'm glad it's been defeated too. I do believe it was put forward by someone with good intentions, who had no idea of the mayhem it would cause, and certainly no idea of the naval traditions of many countries, including the UK.

One person managed to cause outrage and mayhem. Elected MP's, even though they can sit on such panels, and put forward what might seem logically conceived ideas, have no idea what they are talking about. Luckily, in elected systems, such proposals can get shot down in flames, given enough time to discuss them.

Trouble happens when things get pushed through quickly, which our Government seems ever more willing to do <s>

St Piran ensigns are illegal, but in true Cornish fashion are available. The difficulty is finding Red Ensigns small enough to to wear as courtesy flags!
Also available but not recognised by any offical body are vehicle number plates with the Cornish national emblem attached.

(quote....St Piran ensigns are illegal)

It don't stop me from wearing it with pride /forums/images/icons/smile.gif Ok not as an ensign but on the port side of my mizzen...!

PS.. I got some great stickers in Trago Mills... they read "BXLLXCKS TO EUROPE" I thought about sticking one next to the bog roll in the heads, just as a reminder every time I wipe my arse. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
