Red Diesel

Red is currently available but the Govt have been consulting on how to phase it out for recreational boat use as a consequence of an EU court ruling. Prices vary but we have seen it from less than a quid a litre to £1.30 - both the the 40% / 60% split.

Hypothetically of course:
If someone was to use red from their farm, keep the boat on a swinging mooring and store the boat on the farm through the winter; who would know, what chance of HMRC dipping the tank to check?

Dipping the tank would still only show your red diesel, it's the 300 metre hose from the farm yard to the river bank that might give the game away.

Just had a look at the paper from the link you sent. I read it as still alright to use until April 2222
I understand we can continue to buy and put red diesel in our boat fuel tanks until April 2022 .
It remains to be seen whether we may be required to immediately consume or dispose of any red fuel from our boat tanks at that time.

It seems to me there must be a transition period during which the presence of red fuel contamination in boat fuel tanks is tolerated . About a couple of decades should be reasonably sensible . :)

The disadvantage of course being the cost
I hope it stays and at 60/40 otherwise our boat may well turn into a caravan!

I think it will just have to be one of things we have to grin and bear it. Maybe we will get the 60/40 duty split but that is by no means certain.
