Tone just emailed, which was thoughtful.

Unfortunately he said, "eat my shorts" which was less so.

Full text:

The Government's application to renew the derogation from the EU Energy Products Directive which allows the use of rebated gas oil ("red diesel") in private pleasure craft has been rejected by the European Commission.

The Government is aware that this decision will have disappointed many boat owners and others in the leisure boat industry. Unfortunately there is no scope for overturning the Commission's decision, but officials have begun the process of meeting concerned and affected organisations to discuss the implications of the Commission's decision, and the Government will be exploring the options for the most appropriate implementation.

Seems fair enuff to me.If we all go a bit slower and use the tides a bit more will prob save some money and the world too.

Damn it, you had one too? I thought it was personal to me. Basically, he's awfully sorry, tried to help, but those nasty Brussels boys just wouldn't listen.

Ah well, "c'est la vie" as they say. Can't wait for the next one about the road tax proposal!!

I wouldn't hold your breathe. The response about ID cards was a basic re-iteration of all the points they've made in the past. ID cards will stop terrorism, identity theft (and credit card fraud), immigration abuse - and for only 3 quid a year - its a bargain, right? Oh, and they promise to smack the wrist of anyone being naughty with the data.

Interrogation centres open soon, form an orderly queue....

Come on Fred, surely you haven't been brain washed by the green brigade as well? for gods sake its all in the name of nicking more money from your back pocket! this planet has gone through so many changes over millions of years, when I was in the B.V.I. last year we visited an area that had huge rocks/cave formations these were at sea level, but thirty feet above our heads were rocks that had been eroded by the Sea millions of years ago! and they are worried about sea levels rising! sea levels are nowhere near what they were years ago.

Its all about making people concerned and taking their money! IMHO of course!

Only one thing will promoted and encouraged the car manufacturers in the 1970s to turn away from large inefficient engines. The cost of fuel forced the buying public into prefering more economical vehicles. The USA is now catching up,if 40 years late.

Wrote back:

"Under the circumstances would the Prime Minister care to explain why the UK is proposing raising the tax rate on biodiesel so high that it would be more expensive in the UK than hydrocarbon diesel in Spain?

A large number of users of red diesel might well have been prepared to use biodiesel and the manufacturers were in process of preparing to meet this demand. A more than eightfold increase in duty is highly likely to cause the potential expansion of the biodiesel market to be stillborn.

It does give the impression of desperately chasing tax revenue rather than encouraging the use of carbon neutral fuels.

Thank you for your help in this matter,

Andrew Fanner"

Nobody will ever read or act on it but I felt better.

Re: A brainwashed boater writes..............

Right with you andrew.

I've really kept quiet on this one as I'm about to lose the plot with bliar and his mutts and visit downing street to do something dreadfully anti social on his doorstep. may make me feel better.

The whole thing that really hacks me off is the years of protestations from that bunch of mindless narks that UK taxation would be set by UK governments and that the veto on tax was a sacred cow that would never be sacrificed..........until TB and associated cronies can see EU offices and expense accounts on the horizon.......

I hate them all and I wish now that guy fawkes had succeeded as he was the only one to go to parliament with a good idea!
