Red Diesel In Jerry Cans Unlawful?

red in cans is perfectly legal in UK waters.

Sorry to cause confusion with my earlier post. I failed to make it clear that the "red in cans" ban does not yet apply to the UK. I say yet because I have the distinct feeling that the present concessions to UK mariners with regard to red diesel are but a preliminary move to keep us and the EU happy for the time being. I would be very surprised if we are not moved to Stage Two in the near future in order to bring us into line with European legisaltion

When it happens, the dear old RYA will strap on its rusty armour and have another tilt at the windmills but I hold out no prospect of them diverting the mighty Euro juggernaut. Enjoy your red while you can (no pun intended).

Arggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh

I've made my Eber tank from a small jerry can

That's probably OK if it acts as a permanently installed tank for the heater only. You may even be allowed to put heating oil in it on the continent?

Is that an Evasion in your avatar DJB? 6 gall isn't much, or is that just for the eber?

It's a 1989 Jeanneau Sun-Dream 28. Why they put such a tiny 6 gall tank in I don't know, the cockpit locker is cavernous and (I think) there's also unused space behind the heads which are in front of the cockpit locker on starboard side. They do do quite well in racing but it's by no stretch of the imagination an out and out racer. The tank's for the engine (Yanmar 2GM20) and the Eber. I could fit a separate tank for the Eber to partially address the problem as mentioned in the thread, I would quite like to run the Eber on white diesel only anyway. Oh dear!!!

I have recieved a response to my query to the Editor of Yachting Monthly regarding their item on "Illegality" of red diesel in cans. I quote below:-

"Dear Peter
We have now clarified the situation, with the help of Stuart Carruthers, cruising manager for the RYA, who says: ‘It is not illegal to carry red diesel in cans on deck in the UK or the Channel Islands. But in many parts of the near continent, carrying red diesel in anything other than your main tank can land you in trouble.’

Sorry for any confusion caused and the delay in replying. I have been abroad on business.

We will be looking at this question in more detail in our “Any Questions” feature in the April issue of YM.

On deck???

provided you decant it into the main tank and keep the receipt. With regard to draining and storing, unless you are captured on CCTV or someone shops you, it should be ok.

I run my eber off my 20ltr jerry can. This will be a problem for me. So I'll er, ignore it I think.

Nowhere does it say this - so we can fill up our jerry cans at the local fuel dock and drive them back to our boat 'cos we're using it to fill up our Eber tank?
I think so - just collected (in the car) 70+ litres of red diesel in 6 cans (coloured red and black) and it's in the tank now (the boat tank - not the car tank!) -so we're OK for the next 3 to 4/5 weeks. (depending on how cold it gets)
