Rectifier / Regulator

Well here i am with another problem.

I have been investigating my poor battery charging and it looks like the problem is from a rectifier / regulator box. My engine (Farymann Diesel - German) incorporates a coil / magnet like alternator which has an output of approx 100 VAC at 2500 RPM.

Before ordering the replacement part i've been wondering if i could get one of these "smart" regulators i read about in this forum and PBO itself.

Are these good for me or are these used for people having the proper alternators ?

Yours guidance, as usual is much appreciated.

Thanks

Tyrone.

When you say magnet, is this a solid magnet, or a coil around a soft iron core.
The alternators that the smart regs fit has a rotor (electromagnets) revolving in a stator (the annular coil ). The regulators control the voltage to the rotor, thus the magnetic field, and thus the output, therefore will not work with a solid permanent magnet.

Thanks for your reply.

I really don't know. Problem is i don't know which one i have. All i can say is that the output is around a 100 volts a.c and therefore the regulator unit needs to be a primarilty a rectifier and not just a d.c. regulator.

Any further suggestions

Cheers

I have a Farymann A40 (12hp) and we have fitted a standard automotive alternator with an inbuilt regulator.

Have you looked for a local service agent, if not, I know the guy who runs the UK marine service for Farymann and he is very helpful.

Please shout if you need help.

Look at http://www.farymann.de/frames_englisch.htm

The Maltese agents are

If you're getting 100V AC then I suggest you need a transformer - not just a regulator. Trying to regulate 100VAC to 14.4V is a non-starter.

It's probably easiest to replace whatever it is you've got with a conventional alternator. Otherwise if you do have something close to 100VAC (RMS) at a reasonable frequency you could think about buying a battery charger (one using a switched mode power supply) - but I wouldn't guarantee the results

Hi,

Sorry to have to get back to you.

Not having much joy with my local supplier. Could you please contact the UK Farymann service center and see if he can be of any help ?

I need the voltage regulator which comes with the 32W Marine Farymann Engine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

No problem. I cannot get hold of the marine specialist at the moment but I have spoken to the main importer in the UK. Their comments are:

The part that is currently fitted should have the following markings. 547.175.2

They have one of these in stock at a cost of £107.02 (Sterling) + VAT and carriage.

If you would like to talk to them then here are their details, just ask for the parts department.

Good luck.
