Rectangular Calorifier

I just replaced our old cubic Seaward F1150 with a 40 litre Quick Nautic drum shaped one. I could have bought a direct replacement for the cubic one from these guys who were very helpful by email:

But the Quick Nautic was cheaper and after all, I was replacing the Seward F1150 because it was leaking.... but then again it may have been good for 30 years before it leaked!

Do bare in mind though that you're not really getting the maximum out of the space as the actual water container inside a rectangular/cubic calorifier is actually cylindrical anyway.

Thanks to all for the comments so far. I am shocked to hear that the water cylinder in a rectangular unit is drum shaped, seems to defeat the point. I shall investigate this further.

I am not looking for a gas powered replacement as it doesn't seem a very good idea. I am looking for an electric replacement to occupy the same space. My engine (a Bukh 36) is raw water cooled so I may look to connect that up in the future but initially I want an eletric powered calorifier.

The other concern is the existing gas heater is at head height. Will this be a problem?

The effectiveness of the domestic water system will not be affected by having the calorifier high in the boat. The normal positive displacement pump will cope with the additional head quite easily. The weight of water of a large calorifier might be an issue for the fixings.

Once you come to heat it with your Bukh you may struggle a little to fill the hoses with water. You will probably need to back-fill from the calorifier, then get the hose on the nozzle fast. It can be done, though.

I think you are wrong. The only rectangular calorifier I can think of is an Isotemp, and it most certainly isn't drum-shaped inside.

That one does like it may be rectangular, but all the ones i could find were not. Here's the proof, nice square shape to fit neatly in the engine bay, but barrel inside.
