Here's a link to a thread I started a few years ago on the subject of the red schooner:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95562

Thanks for that, it was before I joined the ranks of cruising yacht owners and the forum. Most informative. A fellow club member says he spent some time on one during his National Service, and it was he who told me what she had been originally.

Not that many a couple of days ago though - less than a dozen.

Think you are a bit out there. Just been to Pin Mill - around 25 boats there South of the hard and between Woolverstone & the bridge probably 60+. Couldn't see the rest of the river. Strangely only 1 above the bridge.

Unless things have changed in the last week or so then I'd put the number of boat afloat on moorings at around half these numbers, possibly less between Pin Mill and the Orwell Bridge.

You're quite right - don't know what I was thinking.
Mind must have been elsewhere (it frequently is these days).

Did notice that the stretch of river from Pin Mill down was virtually empty now.
Apart from Windharp, that trawler type what's anchored in Long Reach and a small yellow thing just off Nr3 Green.

While we are on the subject of that "trawler type", who knows about it? Only seen people on it twice.

We have just walked from Pin Mill to Clamp House and back.

I counted 11 yachts visible from Clamp House, and there are around another 15 at Pin Mill.

There are a load more up at the Stoke SC moorings which remain afloat all winter.

It was for sale with (I think) Clarke and Carter at Levington. It does not seem to be on their website anymore but i guess they would know.

Well, let's see 11 plus 15 = 26 :D

Loads more at Stoke - well I counted from the lay byes up the river and I think over 50 was right - bit difficult to be sure as you are looking along the trots.......

Try Julia Jones “Strong Winds Trilogy” where you can learn more of the “darker side” of the “Hispaniola” as Julia calls the schooner in her 3 books in the series. Great stories, intended mainly for Children, but I’m loving them!
