Recommended Oil for Volvo 61A

Hello fellow Boaters,

I know this has been aired previously but can fellow Volvo 61A owners please advise on the best engine oil for this particular engine .
I am river based so generally don't run above 1500/1800 rpm.

Any 15/40 vds 2 or 3 spec oil .

I'm not a 61a owner but Volvo Penta recommendations seem the same for your engine as my kad32 . It seem to me mineral oil is best .
You could use Volvo Penta oil of course and it would be hard to say that is not ''the best''.

Or pay half the price for something that is perfectly good .

Your local motor factor should be able to supply a couple of 20L drums at a very sensible price.This might be there own branded stuff but provided it meets the spec it should be OK.
From memory price should be around £50.00 per drum
Several sellers on Ebay selling the VDS spec.

Second on 15w40 mineral oil. Ran the 61s for more than a decade on this.

Have been using a Semi Synthetic 15/40 oil for sometime. ( Revolution Oils )

Perhaps after hearing from Forum Members I should revert back to Mineral oil ?

On an engine that’s not worked hard you stand a chance of bore glazing using synthetic oils .

definitely. You’ll need 15 litres of mineral oil per engine.

The cheapest oil will have the spec. used for when the engine was made. VDS?
