Due to many different circumstances we are having to abandon our planned trip from the upper Thames to Belgium and Holland. Instead we are thinking of spending a couple of weeks on the East Coast. We cruise (weather permitting) at 18 knots and draw just over a meter what places would you recommend to visit and what to avoid. I have done very little cruising on the East Coast but have done plenty out west. So most of it will be new.
thanks

Dave

No Children No dogs 2 boats going dont mind mooring/anchoring some of the time , places with good eateries popular with the ladies.

South to North
Chatham on the Medway -visit the historic dockyard
Burnham on Crouch - nice small town. Eat at The Ship Inn or Oyster Smack or the Thai.
West Mersea - superb seafood and other eateries.
Heybridge Basin -call first for lock in time. Best food at the Jolly Sailor
Quiet night at anchor in Pyefleet Creek
The Stour and Orwell - lots to choose from
The Deben -Tidemill Marina in Woodbridge. See their website for cill depths.
The Ore and Alde. Orford is very nice ( no marinas)
Southwold -perfect East Coast classic

Step 1- buy an East Coast Pilot.

Nothing wrong with Moody's selection, but of course you will get different opinions.

I would miss Chatham, big shopping centre and a bit souless, perhaps see if you can be accommodated by Rochester CC instead. Nice location and only a bus ride away from the Maritime museum if that's your thing.

Burnham - yes

West Mersea - Yes

Heybridge - could happily give it a miss, although it is quite nice.

Pyfleet is overrated I think. Go for a night or two in Brightlingsea instead.

Dip into the Walton Backwaters for a night at anchor if the weather is good before heading up the Orwell.

The Deben is a must

The Ore and Alde are interesting and worth doing

Southwold is another must.

The only other thing I would do is, if the weather is good, go as far north as you can as quickly as you can, then meander back slowly. This is thinking as a motor boater with the ability to put miles under the keel quickly.

Diesel is available at the tidemill. It's now at the inshore end of the north arm. Look for the green container.

I would agree with most of that.

Heybridge is worth stopping at. Go for a walk alongside the canal and have at meal at either pub

Yes, overrated, go into B'sea

If you do decide to overnight at anchor in The Walton Backwaters, rather than stopping at Stone Point head up Hamford (West) Waters, possibly into Oakley Creek for a night with the seals or pick up a buoy in Walton Creek (no charge) and if the tide is right HW early evening, dinghy up to the Walton and Frinton Yacht Club (WFYC) for a beer and something to eat or a wander into Walton (about 5 mins up Mill Lane). Good dinghy access to the WFYC above half tide.

Humm well, the Deben entrance has three cafe's available, one I understand is a specialist Fish Food one, right on the shore, the other 200 yds away, the third is on the Bawdsey Shore mooring to bouy by arrangement with the Ferry Boatyard; or Harbour Master/

Ramsholt certainly has a Pub, unless its out of service again; plus local moorings to buoy (just ask on here for an offer ?)

Waildringfield still has a Pub I understand.

If both Motorboats cannot they just be beached, or is it a keel /prop problem ?

The Ramsholt Arms is certainly open, was there last Thursday and so is The Maybush at Waldringfield. Both serve good grub and the crabbing is good at Ramsholt, according to the grandchildren, best part of their holiday they said!
Wrabness is good on the Stour, moorings and anchoring.
