Looking for folks recommendations for good quality AGM batteries for the house side of my sailing yacht. Physical size limited by battery compartment (350mmL x 175mmW x 190mmH) so nothing bigger than 120Ah @C20. Thinking Rolls or Leoch but no experience with either. Thanks

My default choice for batteries for any purpose is always Varta, but the reality is that there is little to choose between any of the established brands.

If you look at the Tayna on-line batteries site, they have all of the brands and you can easily check on the specific sizes of each. I have always had excellent service from Tayna and their prices, delivered, are very competitive.

Have a look at Victron Super cycle AGM, they can be deeply discharged multiple times if necessary (though I wouldn’t unnecessarily do so). I’ve fitted six in my boat and so far have been very pleased with performance.

Victron Super AGM Battery 12V - 125Ah | onBoardEnergy

Victron kit is generally good quality though I’ve no idea who actually manufactures these for Victron.

Those are at the the high end of both specification and of course cost. Generally speaking the more you pay the greater the potential life (as in discharge cycles). If you are a liveaboard with 300+ discharge cycles each year then you could justify the price, but for more modest users less highly specced types are probably better value. The big developments in AGMs have been at the lower end with batteries for stop start vehicles which are typically 35% more expensive than Leisure batteries with potentially between 50% and double the life. A 100Ah stop start is around £160.

Whether you choose one of those or one 2 or even 3 times the price depends on whether your usage pattern justifies the extra expenditure.

Good lord, and I am a devout atheist, at those prices I would expect them to make the morning pot of tea.

I have a 3*130 Ah Probat housebank and a 75Ah engine starter battery that fits your height restriction of 190mm.

They have only been on the boat since 2020 and worked without fail. I am adding solar power this year and have Victron charging and monitoring kit.
