Recommendations for boat dog

You won't have a badger problem, Dashies were bred to hunt them. A comfort I'm sure to know that your boat will be 100% badger free.

Oh hell I hadn't considered badgers...Ive just bought a bloody cat, as I read they were "essential" to keeping down rat infestations, are you now saying I should get a Dachshund to ensure I don't end up with a badger infestation ?

No wonder Noah had a big panic on !

Don't forget your staghound to deter on board deer infestations. ;-)

Our dogs of choice are small terriers, easy to handle, take up almost no room, undemanding and both have been known to cross their legs for the best part of 24hrs!

Big no vote for the Jack Russell. Had two and loved them to bits but they shed hair like nothing else alive, got everywhere, in every nook and cranny and plenty made it's way into the engine room. Now have a Patterdale Terrier; very low shed, loyal, fun, doesn't jump off too many times, will kill rats all day long so no cat needed and also territorial.

We have two JRs one rough and one shorthair, the shorthair one sheds like hell, the other one barely drops a hair.

Do you make long offshore passages? A Chihauhau would be a good choice... If you run out of stores they fit into a pressure cooker easily.

Only kidding...I'm a dog lover. :D

Perhaps a bulldog would be a good choice - if rats onboard can be a nuisance, God alone knows what happens if you get a bovine infestation.

Just as an aside ribrage, your boat looks absolutely drop dead gorgeous, what is she?

Thanks, 14 years of hard labour , should have just killed the ex wife and only done five years on grounds of diminished responsibility, the (T)rusty old ketch is a Hedonist basically a stretched Endurance, made in the early seventies , steel

plenty of stuff on the blog below - home sweet home ! On the dog front I have a boxer - so have no issue with over aggressive human infestations !

You'd need to make sure it sat to windward all the time...

Ours did (then so did my cockers) he was also my first crew on the lake when I was 6 when dad retreated to bar. Then he could also tack the jib. The down side was being repeatedly "rescued" when I was older and learning to Windsurf, he thought it was a great game..

Great dogs I would have one tomorrow possibly not what the OP is looking for though. Some one said a Jack Russel could malt try a Newfy, never mind the slobber and the gallons of water they can shed when they shake.

Ideal for your grizzly bear infestation!

When we got our Welsh Border Collie I looked forward to many happy hours sailing with loyal companion at my side or curled up down below.

Like lots of Collies he has a pathological hatred of the outboard on the tender and, like Dylan, a deep mistrust of the inboard.

Getting used to steering whilst fending off the dog took some getting used to.

I've gone and done it! We're picking up a working english springer spaniel dog puppy on friday. Visited today and saw puppy and parents who were lovely working dogs. I know I'm in for a couple of years hard work to get it trained properly! Puppies were born in November but owner did'nt advertise until now to avoid the Xmas present market, we underwent a thorough grilling about the home environment and our habits before they allowed us to visit. Will post photo on friday!
