Recommendations for boat dog

We always thought about a dog but concluded it was a selfish thing - the sailing life isn't a dog's utopia. I know many people sail with dogs, but my friends who sailed with four have said that they won't get more dogs while they're still sailing.
 
...having said that - always thought the Otter Hound seemed the part if one felt compelled to take a dog on the water.
 
PVGB-Petit vendee griffon bassett- smart, friendly, lively, medium size, not prone to diving in and swimming. Great companions but not a 'novice' owners breed. Need firm training from puppies but well worth the effort...

Son has just been given a cockerpoo pup - cross between cocker, springer and poodle. Lovely thing it is with wool rather than hair and it doesnt smell even when wet. Just as daft as any other spaniel mind you. Photo of pup with no 3 grandson. The dog is roughly the same size now as a springer

Used to go boating with my Uncle and his black lab. she loved the boat but had a tendency to get seasick when rough.
Occasionally jumped over board. Loved the dingy needed to go ashore at least twice a day.

Unfortunately I am allergic to dogs and cats we had a small poodle for years which never bothered me. But never took sailing.
My wife’s sister has a Standard Poodle which we take sailing and he loves it.

We have a designer dog a “Golden Doodle” the standards daughter. Really nice nature. Comes sailing, been over board twice. Lots of energy needs to get ashore for a good walk at least once or twice a day. They are not really non allergic but they don't shed and it doesn't bother me.

Even without allergies the non shedding is nice.
And the big poodles are not yappy.

Weighs about 55lbs so a bit smaller than average still difficult to get he back on board if she gets excited and jumps.
We are going to get a harness collar just comes off.
 
I'm a Golden Retriever man. But they can be a little too big for many boats.

So what about a Nova Scotia (Newfoundland) Duck Tolling Retriever?

They are a bit like a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Springer.

"Tollers are often mistaken for small Golden Retrievers, but the Toller is more active, both physically and mentally".

I believe dogs should NOT be taken aboard boats.
Dogs need exercise. One sailor told me he took his dog for walkies twice a day.
My CAT Sukie first went ashore all down the Caledonian Canal
on our six month voyage round the western isles.
Sukie only went in the water once, in Puilladobhran, when she jumped from the dinghy and missed.
She swam all round the yacht before being pulled out.

Cats are essential on boats for keeping rats down.
Dogs should be reported to the RNLI or the RSPA.

That's the craziest thing I think I have EVER read on this forum (and Ive read some sh*t) , please excuse me while I go buy my "essential" cat from the chandlers (should give my dog something to chase)

how many cats would you recommend for a super tanker ?

I think I will be smiling all day (and tripping over cats) , thank you so much for that.

+1 for working cocker spaniel.

Another to consider Spanish water dog, if you can handle one they where until recently a real working breed.
 
Big no vote for the Jack Russell. Had two and loved them to bits but they shed hair like nothing else alive, got everywhere, in every nook and cranny and plenty made it's way into the engine room. Now have a Patterdale Terrier; very low shed, loyal, fun, doesn't jump off too many times, will kill rats all day long so no cat needed and also territorial.
