Hi Solenteers... will be taking the boat out for a spin with the mum-in-law + boyfriend & swmbo the weekend of 22nd May with the boat in Berthon. The boaty stuff will therefore be to/from Lymington during daylight hours to ..........................

.....................now that's the question. presuming the weather's ok, where would you take 3 nearest and dearests this time of year that are new to boating, even newer than I for gawd sake:eek:

Too early for the beach I'd say so I'm banking on a quick blast from harbour to habour with a bit of a walk around town at each destination to sample some good food and a jar of ale.. may even try and cook up a bbq onboard weather permitting.. I'm thinking a trip in to Yarmouth or Chi would be good.. anywhere else recommended within spitting distance of Lymington bearing in mind we'll not be in a big boat (Fletcher 19GTS)

Also, if anyone's out and about that weekend and fancies rafting up for a chinwag, I'm sure they'd be up for that as much as myself.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

cheers Gary

Yarmouth if there's any doubt about the weather, because it's just a quick trip across from Berthon. Try the Wheatsheaf for food, or the George if the m-i-l is paying :D

If the weather's better, how about a blast up to Cowes (20 minutes or so) then a gentle cruise up-river to the Folly (another 25 mins or so) and lunch there? A classic Solent experience.

If the weather does favour a barbecue, I'd head to Newtown Creek, land on the little beach on the western side of the entrance and fire up the barbie there (but work out the tides first so that you don't get stranded).

As an alternative to the Folly, you could go to Bucklers Hard and eat at the Master Builder. I'm not a great fan of the MB, in spite of being moored on the Beaulieu River myself, but the surroundings are second to none.

Chichester Harbour is lovely but it's quite a long journey from the Western Solent, particularly with novices on board.

Yarmouth's the obvious one. I presume you mean Christchurch not Chichester (Chi) as that's miles away. Even in a 19 footer, you'd have to time Christchurch right with the bar being so shallow and there are very few places to get ashore there as a visitor without getting your feet wet.

I'd go the other way, if I were you: Yarmouth, Newtwon Creek, Beaulieu or Cowes. Newtown Creek would picking up a buoy or anchoring with little possibility of going ashore, but you could get on a pontoon in Beaulieu and Cowes is an obvious one.

thanks guys, yep, I meant Christchurch, doh:o Have been to Bucklers Hard and Cowes on the Kodak Gold yacht in the 90's so know both the pubs mentioned and from what I recall, BH is good in the sunshine with the grassed hillock to laze on..

I seem to recall Yarmouth having BBQ's around the harbour too?... I do have a rail mount job but will be VERY cozy trying to cook something up onboard whilst anchored in one of the bays so probably wont suggest doing that.

thanks again for the advice

Depends on how much you want them to come again. I had my MiL on the boat once and I took her into the overfalls in the Needles Channel during a Spring ebb with the idea of scaring her off boating for life. Unfortunately she loved it
