The lift pump has just gone on my MD21A and its running hot again. There are also a few ticking timebomb botches that will eventually fail. (epoxy on a crack on the oil cooler is one)

I'm a bit scunnered with it and am now asking myself is 41 years of use enough and is it time time replace it.

Thinking Beta 35 HP to replace it after another did the same successfully to the same boat.

I will spend another weekend on it and get it going again to see me through the season

Who would you recommend to fit a new engine? My boat is Largs based but could be moved for the work

Also what is a reasonable amount to budget for this?

North West Auto Marine and DDZ have both carried out works for me on my old Perkins and I was happy with both. To change out my Perkins 4236 North West quoted £5000k with a trade in for a standard Vetus equivalent with mechanical gearbox about 4 years ago. This is a bit bigger than you have of course, but at the time I thought that was a good deal. North West Auto Marine are Vetus agents, local to you and are likely to do a good job, in my opinion. The DDZ work was expensive and the main job was done well, as was their commitment to fix some minor stuff which they should have carried out at the time e.g. securing wire looms and checking that they RPM gauge worked; they should not have had to be asked to come back, however, they promptly corrected the work.

Try West Coast Marine at Troon - First class workmanship and not hard to pay. I have had a few others do work for me in the past but now I use WCM - never had a problem with them on standard of work or price.

Beta 25 fitted to friends Westerly Longbow in 2012 at Farlie by an independent guy.Think his name was Neil.Cost was about £7000

Has anyone used sterling yacht services at Port Bannantyne? They are listed as a Beta agent on the website.

They fitted a new Volvo in my boat and did a superb job; reasonably priced as well. John Stirling is a perfectionist. And yes they are Beta agents.

+1 for Port Bannatyne if you want someone to do it - but it isn't a terribly difficult job if you have a few weekends spare....

Regards
Donald

few weekends free is the issue. The boat has a list always and I won't get any further on the rest of the list if i do this one....

Anyway its probably better working a few more hours to earn the money to pay someone else on this one.
