Moving down to Dorset, still keeping the boat on the Thames but thought I might go for a small sports boat (something like a Boston Whaler) for more local use. Thought I might trail it home in the winter and keep in Poole Harbour for the summers. Also thought I might join a Poole based yacht club as a way to meet some local boaters and somewhere for a beer and meal from time to time. Was thinking about Poole Yacht Club as they appear to have a good mix of boats, but any recommendations? Also any thoughts on summer berthing ? I imagine most berths fill up on an annual basis so will have to take pot luck as the summer comes around or just park the boat on trailer somewhere and launch when I need it. Dry stack might be good. Any locals with some good ideas?

Both Cobbs Quay and Rockley Park have facilities to keep your boat on site on trailer and self launch when you want.
Dry stack available at Cobbs and possibly Rockley also (not sure). Cobbs has bar with food on site, Rockley is more of a facility within a holiday caravan park.
You can launch at cobbs any state of tide.

Hi. Places to keep boats in Poole include:

1) Cobbs Quay Marina - Drystack is probably full but call and speak to Toby. Definitely berths available in the water & possibly on a trailer. Good facilities and a very good berth holders club for meeting people (01202 674299)
2) Rockley - Drystack/trailer type launching but less facilities
3) Parkstone Bay Marina (Formerly Mitchells) - Drystack/trailer launching plus marina berths
4) Salterns Marina - water berths

There are a range of swinging moorings - Poole Quay Yacht Haven have the numbers

Yacht clubs are really Poole YC & Parkstone YC. Both have good facilities.

Hope this helps

Can only speak as a visitor but I believe that a clubs attitude to visitors often sets the tone of the club as a whole.

I have stayed overnight at Parkstone Yacht Club (not the marina) this summer and I was made to feel very much second class. Wouldn't stay there again.

On the otherhand... stayed at Poole Yacht Club last year and was made very welcome.

Thanks - Cobbs Quay sounds good for facilities and club. What prompted the Poole Yacht club idea was that I called in on a boat when passing through some years ago, and again, found it to be very welcoming. Thanks for all your comments.
