"Real" anchor testing - ie underwater filmed with a Gopro attached above the anchor

Here is a great video showing how anchors behave in real life - ie underwater attached to a boat, rather than on a beach attached to a truck. He has a Gopro tethered to the anchors to see how they set and what happens when the boat veers by 90 degrees. Only downside is lack of a Rocna but there other "modern" anchors

Have a look at https://youtu.be/l59f-OjWoq0

I was led to this from the ActiveCaptain site. Now I am standing back and waiting for the fireworks

No fireworks necessary ...... the CQR did exactly what CQR's do, as the man said! :encouragement:

He is somewhat obsessed - the compilation is the 56th anchor setting video!

40 minutes? Can you direct us to the hightlights?

They are a great series of videos. That must have taken a lot of effort.

You can see the individual videos here:

Underwater there is a very noticeable difference between good and not so good anchor models. If you can see this for yourself the difference is quite shocking. I hope this sort of education helps convince people of great improvements in anchor design that have occurred over the last decade.

Am I not correct in saying that the (genuine) Bruce did as well as any of the "new" anchors? I think he also said that the CQR that he tested, may have been a copy, which rather reduced the credibility of his results.

While not knocking his efforts, I think in the real world, if you want to anchor, you don't do it charging astern at three knots. I do, however, admire the work that he has obviously put into his research. So much better than the normal underwater stills that tell very little.

No, that's not what I took away from it at all. The Bruce developed considerably lower holding power and at shorter scopes dragged and failed to reset.

I'm glad I bought a Spade....

+1

Tks tudorsailor, interesting vid ...and hardly the stuff to make us Spade acolytes weep into our coffee

Re: "Real" anchor testing - ie underwater filmed with a Gopro attached above the anch

I would be interested to see how he floated the Gopro to get reliable video

Maybe no Rocna since once it is set it is so far below the sea bed that it cannot be filmed????

yup - that's some nice work to get the camera to sit in the same position relative to the anchor and give a steady picture.

You can see the control lines and I guess he used a float (small fender?) to hold it up ... that would sort out the vertical plane - what about the horizontal?

edit - Ah, I see it - have a frame above the anchor with 2 floats and put the camera on one side of that ... ok :)

I wonder why he didn't test the Rocna?

If they are the same underwater videos up on Sailing anarchy taken in or near Seattle

then

the Manson and Rocna were considered to be the same anchor

and really a copy of the Spade

Thanks for posting.
Really informative video; good to see someone doing detailed research too.

Re: "Real" anchor testing - ie underwater filmed with a Gopro attached above the anch

Most anchor tests seem to just work on ultimate holding strength. What this guy looked at was far more valuable IMHO.

As an aside, do any Manson users recognise the apparent failings in re-setting that these tests showed? Just that I'm on the verge of buying one (or a Rocna) and was a bit surprised by its performance.

You might want to look at his more detailed test of a Manson Supreme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giDsoDHxG_c

PS Get a Rocna
