"Real" anchor testing - ie underwater filmed with a Gopro attached above the anchor

Re: "Real" anchor testing - ie underwater filmed with a Gopro attached above the anch

Entrenched loyalties take a long time, if ever, to drag into reality.

Much better to live in an ideal world where your choices are never in doubt, your anchor never bends, does not rust, holds in every seabed. Reality, however occasional, is for other people to worry about - but make sure you criticise when they have the temerity to mention it.

Interesting comment made by Fortress: CQRs, Bruce and Delta - the stalwarts of the anchor world, many are ancient now but stories of bent or broken shanks, in genuine models, noticeable by their absence. Our more modern product, with all the benefits of new technology and better steels - a surprising number of threads where bent shanks, and sometime roll bars, are mentioned. Some anchor makers do not appear to have learnt. its a good thing these anchor makers have a loyal, forgiving and dare I say it, short sighted, customer base.

Well there no doubt in my mind every anchor thread end up in some kind of warfare .
Maybe it's time There ban all anchors and anchoring thread :)

Is this warfare confined to sailors? Most motorboats in the med seem to have a variety of tiddly anchors . Of course MOBOs probably rarely spend nights at anchor......

I would be interested to see how he floated the Gopro to get reliable video

Maybe no Rocna since once it is set it is so far below the sea bed that it cannot be filmed????

TudorSailor

Quite correct,

This video shows a Rocna exceptionally well set. I have to wonder if it works better when the tide comes in.

I have no wish to knock these anchors, which are obviously very good, but I was struck by several things in that video.
Obviously it's easier to demonstrate functionality on dry land, but does it compare with real life?
I may be wrong, but I certainly got the impression that the (copy?) CQR, and the (copy?) Bruce, were pulled along the ground much faster than either of Smith's anchors.
And then there was a lot of emphasis about the careful choice of hi-tech materials, where we know that shortcuts were made.
However, as someone has pointed out, "Don't get excited dear, it's only an advert".

Rocna are now selling a new anchor compleat with an wireless camera so skipper can see how well there anchor is set without diving in to check .
Take a look on Ronca web site for more info .

+1 and some.

The thing that struck me was that if the Vulcan is so good (and so original) and does everything the Rocna does (except the Vulcan does not need the roll bar) why are they focussing the Vulcan at the MoBo market and why are they making the Rocna at all!

It seems to be deceitful to sell a better product in the shadow of something inferior.

Maybe its something to do with timing or the date?

Jonathan

You do not need a camera with a Rocna, its another waste of money.

At the end of the day it is quite clear that modern anchors are better than traditional anchors and it pretty much does not matter which one you buy. Some are slightly better than others and no anchor is going to be the best in every type of bottom. If you are a Luddite and think that your genuine CQR/Bruce etc is better than a Spade or Rocna etc the only person you are fooling is yourself.

I've just sent this video to my son in the BVI. He was on a friend's Cat the other day and they took 2 hours to set the anchor. They were in a bay off Peter Island in between 2 other Cats so their options were limited (other than buggering off). My son said he was on one of the bows shouting to the skipper where the anchor was and the skipper was manoeuvering the best he could. I have just Skyped my son and as he didn't think he would be in the sun too long he didn't put a shirt on. His back is not a pretty sight.

You might have omitted to attach the video :)
