The US government has a new website, http://www.ready.gov It's another attempt at scare mongering in the style of the old "duck and cover" advice after WWII.

The fun thing is that these pictures are so ambiguous they could mean anything! Here are a few interpretations.

expl_vis_dont_run2.gif

If you have set yourself on fire, do not run

expl_vis_shout2.gif

If you spot terrorism, blow your anti-terrorism whistle. If you are Vin Diesel, yell really loud.

expl_vis_open_door2.gif

If you spot a terrorist arrow, pin it against the wall with your shoulder

bio_vis_substance2.gif

If you are sprayed with an unknown substance, stand and think about a cool design for a new tattoo.

expl_vis_flashlight2.gif

Use your flashlight to lift the walls right off of you!

vis_chem_wash2.gif

The proper way to eliminate smallpox is to wash with soap, water and at least one (1) armless hand.

expl_vis_cover_nose2.gif

Michael Jackson is a terrorist. If you spot this smooth criminal with dead, dead eyes, run the hell away.

vis_chem_area2.gif

Hurricanes, animal corpses and your potential new tattoo have a lot in common. Think about it.

vis_chem_affected2.gif

Be on the lookout for terrorists with pinkeye and leprosy. Also, they tend to rub their hands together manically.

expl_vis_closed_door2.gif

If a door is closed, karate chop it open.

nuc_vis_time3.gif

Try to absorb as much of the radiation as possible with your groin region. After 5 minutes and 12 seconds, however, you may become sterile

nuc_vis_building2.gif

After exposure to radiation it is important to consider that you may have mutated to gigantic dimensions: watch your head.

bio_vis_resp3.gif

If your lungs and stomach start talking, stand with your arms akimbo until they stop.

expl_vis_dust2.gif

If you are trapped under falling debris, conserve oxygen by not farting.

vis_car_wire2.gif

Do not drive a station wagon if a power pole is protruding from the hood.

vis_rad_shield2.gif

A one-inch thick piece of plywood should be sufficient protection against radiation.

Nice One!

With my political hat on, I saw an ad for an interesting looking TV program (which I have either missed this week, or is on next week). The program is a panorama stylee program basically postulating that this is all scaremongering, and that Al Queda (Sp?) and bin Laden have been, if not invented, then blown out of all proportion to suit the business and political ambitions of some very powerful people, some here, some in the US. A point of view which I am starting the believe quite strongly.

Politics over - back to chuckling at the above post!

Great!
People here are wondering what I'm chuckling at...

Wonder when the Blair/Blunkett version will rear its head?

Ch 4 IIRC, well, like Michael Moore they have their own agenda and are not afriad to push it. I don't expect an unbiased/neutral point of view somehow. Pity, it coould have been worth watching...

"The Power of Nightmares" on BBC2 on Wednesday, part 2 next Weds.

Worth watching actually. I don't necessarily agree totally with the analysis, but it's thought provoking stuff and certainly not propagandising, either for the left or the right. The basic thesis is that it's often in the interests of Government to have a bogeyman, and that it's easy to ramp up things that naturally arouse people's fears - such as the ghastliness of the 9/11 attacks - into a world wide conspiracy. Even if you don't agree, I'd recommend watching it, because it's a thoughtful and thought-provoking programme, presented in a measured way, and provides an alternative view to the oft-presented belief that we are on the verge of annihilation by a world wide conspiracy of religious fanatics (but enough about the Catholic Church......./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif)

So.....

When I got home that lunchtime on Sept 11th and there were my wife and younger son with tears in their eyes looking at pictures of the World Trade Centre which we had visited only a few months earlier being hit by Arab Terrorists (or do you think it was it the CIA?) it was a conspiracy of western business was it?

Well I for one want bin Laden DEAD! REAL DEAD and ASAP

Re: So.....

I agree with the sentient, there are some people who just can't be argued with. But there's events (aka the real world), then there's politicians, who work out what they can profit from them, then there's journalists, who make a living by sucking what they can from the post-event trauma or the politicians, or anyone else who can provide a story.

I saw the plane crashing into a tower on a ship, which just happened to have some sat. TV available and it was awful, just like the gulf wars, Chernobyl, the Iranian and Korean airliners being shot down or any number of mindles acts of terrorism that I'd found out about in a similar manner. Nothing any politician or journalist has done post any of these events has ever done anything to remedy them, or to help the people who really suffered. They are all bastards, out for their own gain or glory. Time to go home, methinks.

Re: So.....

Did you know he has to be hooked up to a dialysis machine most of the day because he has serious kidney problems? Real evil and shady fella he is, that machine must be mighty portable for him to escape capture in afghanistan!

I think the most dangerous thing that anyone can do is asume that they know *anything*. You don't actually know that he has anything to do with sept 11th, you've only been told it by untrustworthy sources. If you know what was really going on in that election campaign, and is re-occuring at the moment, then you might be more dubious about believing anything that is said by the current administration.

I'm not a huge fan of michael moore, I sympathise with his views but i disagree with the way he promotes them. On the other hand his audience is your average trailer man american so its understandable that it's quite seriously dumbed down.

Not that our general public is any better. That includes you lot... and me.

Maybe its because I'm a scientist, but my firm belief in most circumstances is that the only thing we know is that we know nothing.

Bin Laden

So maybe he's being treated on the NHS at taxpayers expense?

It's amazing what we learn on the internet.

Bin Laden\'s Kidney Dialysis

I used to believe that Bin Laden must be dead because of his known kidney problems, and the whole problem of kidney dialysis machines in the Afghan mountains etc.

However, if you look round the science museum in London there's the medical history section and there's really old fashioned home made kidney dialysis machines made out of big tins dating back to the '20s or summat like that.

So it is possible he's still alive, just.

All bastards?

Hey, come on! "Nothing any politician or journalist has done post these events has done anything to remedy them or help...." What a load of sweeping bullshit. First, events of that sort can't be "remedied" once they are done. Second, heaps of politicians and writers do actually achieve a lot in the way of helping others and trying to create better conditions so such things don't happen again. But they are not always reported, which is a problem, just as a great deal of good is being done in Iraq by silent brigades of workers on every level and they aren't reported.

Also, must point out Chernobyl was not a terrorist incident. Engineers were carrying out an illegal experiment and had shut down a lot of the safety systems. Not that it makes a lot of difference. Legions of ordinary people including politicians and journalists have done much to bring sense and help to that disaster, too.

I don't think the "they're all bastards" approach is constructive or helpful.

And you wouldn't have found out about these events if journalists hadn't been doing their job.
