@PaulRainbow might be able to help but will need to know what instruments, etc are on board, how many circuits, batteries, engines and .....

Boats, especially older ones are never standard as they have been 'modified' over the years with wires run every where.
what i'd love to do is rip it all out and start again

do yourself a wiring diagram, work out the cable diameters and approximate length of runs and bobs your uncle..assuming your are doing the work yourself.
I wouldnt rush to bin off any of the big fat battery and windlass wiring - that stuff is expensive. I would rearrange and redeploy it.

I would like to get auto electrician to do the work but don't know how much it will cost
Given the value of the boat, it will cost too much to pay a professional to rip everything out and start again.

It would not be possible for anyone to give you a quote, far too many variables, but it would be £1000's

does anyone know how much it would cost to re-wire a colvic traveller 28ft ????
This is a "how long is a piece of string" question. First you have to establish what you mean by a "rewire". Most old boats have rubbish electrics by today's standards often made worse by "improvements" over the years. Ripping out (carefully) and starting again is a good way of doing it, but it is enormously time consuming which is why it would not be economical to pay somebody. However it is feasible to do it yourself but you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and some understanding of how to choose the right components and design the circuits.

I have just done a 31' sailing boat. New batteries, switch gear, split charging cabling, chargers, 12v distribution panel and all wiring except for interior lighting circuits plus 240v shorepower. Material cost around £2k and lost count of the hours. Photos show main 12v DC switch panel to give an idea of the amount of work involved in just connecting things up Work in progress at this point.
