Re-Running a lost internal halyard in a mast .... Spinnaker

The halyard ran free - not through use - but when mouse / trace line parted when re-running it to mast a few years back ...

Part of the reason I am reducing from 12mm to 10mm halyards ... the 12mm is fine when in - but is a tight fit going over the sheeve when seized and trace line connected ....

Rope supplier has sent my 100m reel of 10mm Braid on Braid .... courier reckons delivery tomorrow.

Cleaned up mast base holes and sheaves so now all run free and inserted 10mm coach bolts .... made sure the smooth section reached other side so sheave does not destroy bushes on any thread ... just need to mark bolts for cutting excess thread off, 'wash' mast with mould cleaner then 'car wash / wax' .... run halyards and that's it back on boat !

I am considering maybe rigging another flag halyard each side ... as I use one for radar reflector ... I could move it to a new halyard freeing up outer one for flags ...

Is the mast located using the slot between the bottom sheaves. If so check that the top of the mast bast does not sit on the through shaft.

That could be why your sheaves were originally as separate shafts mounted from each side.

I did measure ... from bottom of bolts is 45mm to slot edge .... the blade on deck is 40mm high ... so the bolts should in theory be just clear by about 5mm ....

We'll find out soon !!! I do have my pal making new separate pins so I can always revert back.

I looked at shop this morning for some steel cable of suitable size - but either too small or too big !! So in the end bought two 5mm poly ropes at 20m each .... thinking about it - maybe clothes line is better ... might nip out and get some ...
With the mast down, I would use Net Curtain wire rather than clothes line. Also I would try and make the leading end slightly bulbous to try to stop it pushing under any other lines, maybe with a 8 or 10mm plastic bead.
PS To extract it at the bottom, a large Tie Wrap pushed in to form an internal loop in the mast works quite well.

Now I have the mast base easily dismantlable ... I can use the halyard that is run through - to pull the extra trace line and existing through. All other lines have trace lines ready to pull. Just then need refit sheaves.

So once the 10mm is here ... its cut to length and run all through ...

My masts are 15m. They have polystyrene foam at several places inside. I had to use 25 mm galv water pipe (threaded joints) to punch through (masts down). It worked for me but if no foam then plastic conduit would do (a la electricians rods) but usually they have to be glued with acetone.

What about chimney sweep rods ? Or Carbon fibre tent poles ?
