Having once had to let my spinnaker run - surprisingly it floated - I do not recommend stopper knots on spinnaker halyards.
I was taught to have stopper knots on halyards, sheets etc. EXCEPT on Spinnaker halyards/guys.

Is the mast located using the slot between the bottom sheaves. If so check that the top of the mast bast does not sit on the through shaft.
That could be why your sheaves were originally as separate shafts mounted from each side.
With the mast down, I would use Net Curtain wire rather than clothes line. Also I would try and make the leading end slightly bulbous to try to stop it pushing under any other lines, maybe with a 8 or 10mm plastic bead.I looked at shop this morning for some steel cable of suitable size - but either too small or too big !! So in the end bought two 5mm poly ropes at 20m each .... thinking about it - maybe clothes line is better ... might nip out and get some ...

PS To extract it at the bottom, a large Tie Wrap pushed in to form an internal loop in the mast works quite well.
My masts are 15m. They have polystyrene foam at several places inside. I had to use 25 mm galv water pipe (threaded joints) to punch through (masts down). It worked for me but if no foam then plastic conduit would do (a la electricians rods) but usually they have to be glued with acetone.
